You will need to take things apart, the lower part on the range lever which engages the shift fork may be broken off or just badly worn. It will probably involve removing the top cover. I had a little trouble with the gear selector jumping out of the shifter fork, and was able to put it back into place by pulling up the boot, driving out the pivot pin, raising it up against spring pressure and reinstalling. It hasn't given any more trouble.
Maybe yours will be an easy fix, try the easy way first. Good luck.

I removed pivot pin and lever came right out. Heavy metal slide moved back and fwd with little resistance but not engaging any gears. Added 90 weight as it looked low tho a month ago i drained and replaced 8 gallons. Ran engine watching gears thru filler opening and tried combinations of gear. Then slide stuck somehow forward or high range and resists going to neutral with springlike resistance. Now cant start engine and I've tried rocking tractor to see if gear needs to mesh. May bypass neutral switch to engage starter and maybe it will align things. Thanks gor ideas.
