TO 35 Standard 23c diesel Tach drive

Anyone had problems replacing the tach drive at the front of the injection pump housing? Had a fire, replaced injection pump and tach drive but drive won't quite seat properly. The splined drive driving the injector pump seems to prevent full insertion of tach drive mechanism. Have I got something screwed up?

I have a 1958 TO -35 with 23C that was overhauled years ago, remember pump spline drive shaft had a ring in a groove used for shaft location. You may have shaft in backwards, would prevent tach drive from seating properly. Is worth a look, let us know what you find.

I've notices that ring or cir-clip on the shop manual drawings. Missing on mine. The shaft itself looks slightly different as well. In comparing the new tach drive to the melted one, I don't think there's any problem there. The "quill" as it's referred to in the manual has a small bolt head attached/threaded into one end. Looks suspiciously like an adjustment device. Any of this sound familiar to anyone?

Just removed tach drive from my 23C, with gasket on box I measured just over 1 inch on pocket rule to end of drive, has 3 teeth on one side and 2 teeth on other side of drive. Make sure it is centered, it should fit. Not sure snap ring in my partsbook picture is even needed as tach drive looks like it would prevent pump shaft from coming out. Extra drive shaft I have from parts tractor is 2.085 inch long. Is yours the same length? Early MF 1100 and 1130 used a shaft very similar but may be different length.
