My new 5045e says on the fuel filler cap "Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel Only"......and in the owners manuel it says, "Use of diesel fuel with sulphur content less than 0.10 (1000ppm) is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Use of diesel fuel with sulfur content 0.10(1000ppm) to 0.50(5000ppm) may result in reduced oil and filter change intervals"...........are these new guidelines for new engines? or some sort of emmissions propeganda?

The engine is designed for ULSD, with lower emission requirements, as set by the EPA. I would use a fuel treatment, such as Premium Diesel Treat 2000, that is a little better than Power Service.

I have been using Power Service in my trucks and tractor for over 6 years with good results. I use the white bottle in the winter for it's anti-gelling properties and the gray bottle for it's cetane boost in the non-winter months. Sulfur is a lubricating additive, with ultra low sulfur diesel you get ultra low lubrication for your engine. I will not run straight diesel without Power Service.

No matter what additive you use, I would say your better off using one then not.

Thats kinda what I was thinking...better to use it than not. I have never owned a tractor before that had the ULSD lable on the filler cap.

Sulfur was never an additive in diesel fuel. The process of removing the naturally occuring sulfur also removed some of the lubrication compounds.;)

Confuse me??? Soooooo....what about what the manuel says.

Not.
PowerServe and similar additives are a waste of money.

Does it REALLY say "reduced intervals" ?
If so that is poor wording, at best.
Yes more sulphur is bad, bad for the engine it is in and bad for us when we breathe what comes out.
It adds a little to the lubricating properties of the fuel, but the refiners have made up for that "in the mix", so don't worry about it.

Unless you are a non air breathing life form you should take this seriously.
If you ARE a non air breathing life form I would appreciate it if you take it seriously for those of us who DO breathe air.

.

Some studies have shown the refiners have NOT consistently compensated for the loss of lubricity from removing the sulfur.

I run PowerService DieselKleen most of the year and can tell a difference in how quick my diesels start as well as how quiet they run with it. I use the white bottle PowerService in the coldest part of winter although where I am it isn't much of an issue with cold temps.

I also run about 1-2% of either B99 or 2 stroke oil to boost the lubricity.

Cab/air- not sure what has confused you in my earlier post. I never said sulfur wasn't IN diesel fuel, just it was never ADDED.

Who's studies ?
Funded by ?
Hopefully NOT the aftermarket additive companies....

Sure, a lot of people put a lot of STP in their vehicles for a LONG TIME in the belief that even if it didn't do any good it wouldn't do any harm and maybe it would do some good... on and on.

There was a independent study done when USLD came out. It showed that a lot of vendors have decreased the lubricity of diesel enough that it was a concern. The additives allow that to be put back in without harm to engines that use and need USLD. Power service is one addition that helps to add it back into a engine that needs it. I saw the study on bobistheoilguy if you are interested in reading and seeing it.

Steve (adds Power service for the lubricity and cleaning of the fuel injectors)
