Y'all:

Thanks for the help on which tractor to buy.

I decided on a base JD 5225.

Now the question is should I buy it out of state for $800 cheaper or at the dealer that I would probably have to get it serviced at?

I spray ROW and airport turf in AL.

Thanks,

Zack

My first question is...would that $800 savings be ate up by shipping costs? If so, you may as well buy local. I'm sure the dealer would provide more enthusiastic service to a customer.

I did buy out of state (I'm in PA, tractor came from a dealer in southern Virginia). My dealer hasn't given me any grief...but I've not had service except for buying consumables

I'd stay local.

$800 probably represents less than 5% of the total deal. Not worth it to me, even if your out of state deal includes shipping.

I just bought a new Kubota. I could have saved some money by going out of my area but I thankfully bought local. Let me explain: When I bought the tractor I wanted a grapple and a Woods backhoe. The Tractor was ready but the grapple was backordered. The dealer delivered the tractor for me to use until the rest of my stuff was in. Then he picked it up and delivered it back when he got everything installed. When I had a question about how the mower was cutting he sent a mechanic down there the same day. also when I got some bad Diesel and the tractor died at 4:30 on a Friday afternoon he sent out a mechanic to drain the tank and purge the lines. then he called me on Monday morning to check and make sure the tractor was OK and that I was happy. Yes I am glad I bought local. Not only have I enriched my local economy but I have a dealer that I can trust and depend on.
Just my .02

If it be me, I'd march myself in to the local dealers office, explain the quandry you're facing, and offer to buy from him if he'll split the difference. That'll cut $400 off his price, keep the money in the local area, set yourself up for better service at the local dealer, and solve your problem.

Is your $800 dollars including a savings on sales tax? Just remember, if you think your getting out of the sales tax you may not. This has been discussed many times over and many people have gotten the old slip from your state as much as two years later stating they owe. If you are considering sales tax and then you still are saving $800 I would be going back to your local dealer and telling him to at least split it with you. You don't want to upset him cause he still has to take care of you after the sale but even if he doesn't split it with you that $800 is a drop in the bucket over the lifetime of your tractor and it will be eaten up in traveling expenses because the local dealer may not take care of your tractor at all or give you good service since you bought it elsewhere.

I didn't use the local dealer because the price difference was $3,500 difference on a JD 5203! I would have given $800 difference to the local dealer in a heartbeat.

My two bits.

Yes, I agree with the local thought. $800 is a small price to pay for the peace of mind in the event of some unforseen problem. I would only consider out of state if the price difference was above $2000. Of course this would depend on how far the out of State dealer is.
