To Flail or not to Flail?

Going back and forth in my mind on getting a 6ft -7ft HD Bush Hog (or Brown) and now maybe a Flail Mower. There is a used Alamo flail mower about an hour drive from me. Thanks in advance for your time for looking at this unit, as I am not up on my flail mower knowledge.

Depends on what you want to do. Flail mower is for grass and weeds, bush hog will handle small saplings depending on the bush hog how large. I have cit many 4" pine cedar and popular with a bush hog. I heard somewhere that sandy soil will sand away flail mower blades, but that is just hear say.

Alamo is a top brand depends on price and condition is it a fine or coarse cut check the roller to make sure its ok Flailmaster has all the blades pins clevics etc looked at web site on ebay it looks like a coarse cut the price seems high for a used unit

I always used the Ford 917 flails. Still have a 917 Fine cut, I don't use anymore. A 45 PTO HP tractor was perfect, but our JD 6200 is just too big and doesn't make sense.

I used to cut many acres with the flail. Not great for long grass unless it's dry at end of season.

The flails often run out of balance. Knives get in various stages of disintegration, you loose some, or debris sticks to the knife assemblies.

All in all, I like Flail mowers better then a bush hog.

Just sold an Alamo 14 or 16 foot finishing mower. Quality was OK. I have seen many Alamo flail mowers at municipal auction but never looked closely at them. Parts MAY be an issue!

If your going to buy new purchase an 7 foot cut
John Deere model 25A finish flail with side slicer knives.

We ran one with a Ford Jubilee knocking down 12 foot golden rod
and brush reclaiming old pasture and we kept it at a 2 inch height

You can find them used at a good price and there is a good dealer
network.

Even an 8 footer will outlive your current mule and you can move
it to a larger mule when and if you upgrade
