to much steering play

I got a john deere 140-H3 hydraulic garden tractor ( close to 50 years old ) that has to much play on the steering wheel I haven look underneath the tractor but most likely the gears are probably worn dose anyone in this forum know where to look at for vintage tractor parts .?? johnny

Have a look around and look up parts in jdparts

John Deere Parts Catalog

May just be an adjustment of the steering box, but also may be worn steering rod ends.

Let us know what you find.

ok gonna have to get under the tractor and get a better look to see if it just needs tightening or if it has worn gears and I'll be looking into those steering rod ends you mention hopefully it'll just be an adjustment in both places...thanks again johnny

it appears this is the steering gear for that tractor, and the third picture should be the adjustment for the play. AM31923 NEW STEERING GEAR FOR JOHN DEERE 12 AND 14 LAWN AND GARDEN TRACTORS | eBay edit: I just checked, and it's the same one in the JD parts site..

My ancient John Deere 2020 has the same problem - I can turn the steering wheel nearly 180 degrees before the front wheels start turning. Dealer said no more adjustment left and the steering gears were no longer available from John Deere. My only option was to find a tractor identical to mine but in better shape!

I hope I don't have to purchase that..gonna check it out on Friday hopefully its just an adjustment I just got the tractor so I don't know much about it except that its nearly 50 years old but if it is the part at lease I know now where to get it...thank you so very much...johnny

I also have a vintage john deere 112 also built between 1968-72 and I'm wondering if some of it's parts are interchangeable with the 140..?? thanks for your infor….johnny
