I'm currently in the process of repainting the 60" mowing deck on my Jd 445. The mmm is in great condition, but is starting to show rust in areas where the paint has flaked off or been worn off. So I have the chance to get it sandblasted ( yes buy a professional) but I'm wondering if that would wear down the deck or do damage? Because if currently using a wire brush. So sandblast or stick with the wire brush?

Just tape off any areas you want saved ,[ bearings,ID plate, and anything you do not want sand in and on]. Fine sand is used and is used on much nicer items than your mower deck. Prime as quickly as you can after blasting and you will be pleased with the results.

Sandblasting requires more skill to master than most people are aware of, if the guy is experienced and knowledgeable he can clean up what metal is there without issues. Like any other sanding you need to use the correct grade or grit for the job.

I would consider sandblasting and powdercoating the deck if you are going to keep it. Powder to match the JD yellow and green are readily available. Powdercoat is less likely to chip than paint.

I personally love powder coat. And a powdercoat shop will sandblast ithe part as part of the deal. I get alot of stuff powdercoated...worth every penny.

Sandblast and then apply a product containing Phosphoric Acid. This will neutralize the imbedded rust and keep it stable. No, you cannot see the embeded rust. After apply paint of choice. :)

Lots of information on The Net.

I take the decks off our riding mowers every 2-3 years- pressure wash, remove the belt, tape off the pulleys/decals, and sand all the rough areas. Spray degreaser, apply a coat of JD primer, then spray on yellow JD paint. I usually do 2-3 coats of paint.

Probably takes 3-5 hours of my time (both decks), but I probably spend less than $15 in supplies and the decks are protected and look like new.

Given the amount of use and abuse I give my lawnmowers, I wouldn't want to spend the extra time and money to have someone professionally sandblast and powdercoat the deck when I'm just going to damage it again.

Maybe if I was restoring an older 318, 400, or project tractor along those lines, I would definitely consider paying someone to sandblast and professionally paint the body panels/deck, but not on the equipment I use daily.

If you are going to leave any bearings (like spindles) in the deck while it is sandblasted, be sure you seal those off from the sand real well. You'd be surprised where sand under pressure can go.

I am in the process of doing the same with the deck on my 445. I just ordered some Gemplers rust converter. My cousin has been using a different brand of rust converter on his equipment and trailers and is quite happy with the results. Anyone here have experience with this product?

That's how I would go too. If you intend to professionally blast and then paint yourself; I'd ask the blaster what is the least damaging media he recommends to get the job job.

IIRC that would be black mica sand that is very fine grit. I use a large welding and fabrication shop which will blast and powder coat reasonably imo.
