My TO30 has a 12v alternator(3wire)and an Echlin VR32 voltage regulator. I have replaced all the wiring. My question is the proper wiring for the two starting posts and the ammeter as well as the one wire off the alternator that (grounds?) in this general area. Does the wire that comes off the ammeter share a post with the pos batt cable?Did I originally have the pos grounded and not know it? I ask because, while I still have the gas tank and carb removed, I was interested in checking my re-wiring efforts after completion by turning the dash knob, but my ammeter doesn't budge.

Try this. Good article describing hows it's done.
Updating The Charging System of Your Older Tractor

Most newer alternators have a regular built in thus eliminating an external one. The GM Deco 10si (3 wire) is a good example and very affordable and used on many conversions. I have one on mine with a tachdrive mounted on the rear. To answer your question. If your still using an ampmeter one lead goes to the power out terminal (single wire hookup on back of alternator - heavy wire). The sense terminal jumps over to the that main terminal. The field terminal goes to the switch. BTW if your battery negative side is grounded to the motor then you have a negative ground. That you want to be sure of before going any further. I'll also post a general hookup conversion. I removed the generator, regulator and ampmeter from my 135 and went back with a matching voltmeter. -robert
