How many remember back when as kid growing up on winter night moon shining air was brisk kids were bundle up,toboggans sleds were tie end to end than to auto pull for many miles on old back country dirt/snowly roads..one got cold or tired plently room in those big old Olds Fords to warm up or rest. :)
If rope broke sled/sleds came free we would sat there or play until auto return..never waited long, indeed fond memories.

Guess if it was try today there would be heck to pay.

Thomas; You bring back fond memories of growing up in Springfield, VT in the 50s. In addition to sledding and tobogganing I remember ice skating under lights and the moonlight. The rink had a hut with a wood stove that warmed us if we needed it. I doubt if our liability laws would allow a hut with a wood stove these days.

Yes sir another fond memory...on shore big camp fire w/smell of pine burning hotdogs/hambugers etc.cooking skating to wee hours in the morning.
Kinda shame more of todays children won't get the chance to taste the simple times.

We use to toboggan down hills and sometimes with Dad pulling us behind the tractor. Afterwards we would drink hot chocolate and Russian Tea. Thanks for posting. It brought back memories.

The local volunteer fire company puts the eagles mere toboggan ride on every year weather permitting. Its a great fund raiser. They cut ice out of the lake than meticulously stack them up the hill, then the blocks are fused together with water, finally an old machine that has been round 50 years or more, grooms a slot all the way down the hill into the ice run, the width of the toboggan and a few inches high either side to act as guides, its about a half mile long and empties out into the frozen lake with top speeds of nearly 50MPH, it takes them a whole week to make the run..
Its a tradition that still carries on today, they sell snacks and hot chocolate at the top. Its rented by the hour and their are two sizes. I have seen people there all the way from Vermont.

Thomas my memories are from the late 50's early 60's when the family would all gather at the grandparents farm for Christmas in Illinois. My Grandfather would hook up his old Oliver tractor to a horse trough with some hay in it and all of us cousins would pile in so he could drag us around the fields. Many of those family members have passed away now but the memories are still alive.

We used to do stuff like that, too. Trouble happened when someone would go to fast, or started using snow mobiles, ATVs and monster 4x4s, and a sled rider would hit a fence post or tree, then die. Then lawsuits, and, well, you know the rest... another fun activity turns into dangerous stunt and that's that. No more fun activity.

We do enjoy the occasional moonlight walks and cross country skiing. I also enjoy ice fishing by the light of the moon.
