I have had dogs all my life but they have always been larger outside dogs. We love them but they stay outside. Last October a tiny chihuahua showed up at our place. Someone probably dumped it as that happens often. We checked all the lost pet places, called the shelter, etc and no one came looking. We kind of took a liking to the little critter and got all her shots and a checkup and she stayed inside with us. My wife who really isn稚 a big dog person fell in love her. This dog was spoiled rotten and went most places with us riding along in the truck. She always stayed inside except when we would go outside and take her with us.

Today we had some company over and were fishing on the pond and had her outside with us. The guys were outside fishing and the ladies inside chatting. The kids were going back and forth between the pond and house and the chihuahua would tag along with them. We then realized she was missing. We searched for about an hour before we found that she had been hit by a car on the county road and killed. The road is about 1000 away from the pond and in the seven months we have had her she has never wandered anywhere near the road and really never goes out of ones sight. We are all devastated. I have had and lost several dogs over my life and it is always sad but never had it hit this hard. I guess having the dog inside and always by your side makes the bond that much stronger.

Bad deal bud. I know what you mean about inside vs outside dogs. Our two ran off a few weeks ago. Everyone misses them but it is nothing like if something happened to my wife’s inside dogs. Full on crisis mode. Grew up with working dogs and looked at them like they were tools. Now they are family. Sorry about the loss. Those little ones always have a ton of personality

Regrets, we put our 13year old dog down last week, it does suck.

That really does suck.

Rose, Ella, Shadow, Lexi, Clover were all with at least 8 years of their lives and lived full time inside with us. Clover was the last on taken to the vet a couple of weeks ago at around age 15. Each one broke our heart when they had to go.

Down the road and in time, check with your local shelter for another small dog, or you might be amazed how soon another smaller onesshows up. When we did rescue work, smaller dogs would be more common given up because they were generally the pet of an older couple who either died or had to be moved to a nursing home. A dog never replaces another in your heart as they are all different in their own way (some more a pain in the butt that others for house training LOL).

You gave that dog 7 wonderful months, never forget that, and a heartfelt sorry for your loss.

It's hard enough when they are getting old; but to lose a pup because of an accident doesn't give you time to prepare for it.
I hope that you find comfort knowing that you gave her a good life in the time that you had.

Awful day. Prayers are with you. We have a little dachshund that lives in the house. We take him for walks. My biggest fear is he gets loose from us when walking.
