Todays fire call

I wasn't able to make this call today as I was away when it happened. This is about the 5th John Deere combine fire we have had in 2 years. I was amazed at how bad it burnt up.

Guessing a lot of chaff buildup on/around the machine. That was cranking pretty good!

Do they have insurance for something like that? I'm guessing there is some kind of policy for farm equipment.

Yes, they should have insurance on it. In fact if it has a loan on it (very likely), insurance is required by the lender.

Lots of plastics, hydraulic oil, rubber hoses, tires.... all make for a very hot, intense and toxic fire.

Looks like a good use for AFFF.

Is it only John Deere's that are burning or are John Deere's the only tractors in your area?

Had a D5 today I thaough about doing that to lol. I have a friend that used to farm. He said in the 80s when farming was getting bad here he was harvesting wheat hy himself and didnt know the bearins on the straw beater on the back were overheating and burning out. He got to the end of the feild and turned around and saw about 1000 feet of feild on fire.

I've seen the aftermath of a couple of combine fires and a round baler in my area. Yeah the burn hot and once started, pretty much toast the entire unit. In one case, the farmer spotted the fire, and was headed for a house to get a hose to put it out. He stayed in it too long and got some pretty severe burns as a result.

Wow...Any injuries?

This area is about 50-50 when it comes to Deere and Case IH. I bleed pretty green so I am not picking on John Deere. There were no injuries. The guy had went to lunch and a neighbor called and said your combine is smoking. He arrived to find it fully engulfed. It was gone before the Fire dept was ever called. It was about 10 mile from the fire station also. His tractor and grain cart was parked right next to it but a passer by was moving it when he arrived so it was not hurt.
