I happen to love old things that serve a purpose. Of course anything to do with gates really gets my attention.

Johnny will be ninety this year. He's a little hard of hearing. Heck, he's a little hard of head too. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Here are some examples of the treasures I'm finding on the old place.

Here's a too kewl gate latch

And another.......

This photo was taken by a fifty four year old dummy that didn't know he was supposed to slide that piece of rebar out of the top rail of the gate frame. And then the pin would catch not only the post but the gate latch too.

Lead a man to a gate but that don't mean you can make him close it right......

And yes, that piece in the middle of the picture above is a walk gate. Old Johnny just used what he had available at the time. The curved pieces are tines from an old hay rake and the rest of it is rebar. The hinge plates are down at the ground and the latch assembly is that little rectangle at the top.

I will be posting more pictures of his ingenuity. He's a salty old cuss. But then I imagine it takes a little brine to preserve one to that age. He drives, bought a new Ford last year, and he hears a lot more than he lets on too. His mind is sharp as a tack.

He's from the old school. He don't offer advice unless he's asked. So he will stand there and let you tie yourself in knots and never change his expression or even grunt. But if you ask...............

wroughtn-harv:I agree with your assessment of the cool factor. /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif I've always admired the creative means of using "junk" , as some would call it, to solve everyday problems on the farm. It approaches an art form with the creative signature and approach clearly expressed for all to admire. /w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif Around here, it's referred to as .."yankee inginuity", but I'm sure, the reference would'nt hold in TX. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif Thanks for sharing with TBN and other creative types. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif ....RayBee
