I was Home Depot last week, for a small hand tool I needed to finish a job, and just when I walked by, two employees were marking down (and I mean MARKING DOWN) some power tools. They had a Lincoln 125 HD Weld Pack, in a box, new and complete except for the spool of wire and the face shield, (normally $419) just then for under $70! Needless to say, I now have a welder. I have wanted to take a class at a tech school for years, but none are offered in my area without too much driving thru major traffic. Now, I guess I will teach myself to do simple welding. I have an old stick welder, which I sometimes had luck with, sometimes not, but I have hopes that this wire welder will be easier to learn on.
I also got a heavy duty Milwaukee 1/2" drill, new but the display model, for $25! I suppose those frequent trips to HD can pay off. They didn't have the close-quarters ratcheting screwdriver I went in for.

I ran in on a good deal like that a while back on hand tools. When I went into the store they had a shopping cart full of tools sitting in the isle and it had like a set of sockets with maybe one missing, or a swag tool with no information on it and it had been used by an employee and laid on top of a shelf, and a heavy duty stapler, screw driver sets bit sets, tin snips channel locks needle nose pliers and the list goes on anyway one of the workers saw me looking and asked if I saw anything that I wanted. I said yes a few things, just thought he was making small talk and he said I'll let you have everything in the cart for $20 and I thought he was kidding, and I asked him for real? He said yes and I said sure and he went through the tools and got their skew numbers and went with me to the check out counter and told the cashier that he was selling it for $20 because the store manager had told him she didn't want it there the next day to do whatever he had to to get it sold. I felt like I had made off like a bandit, when I figured up what it would have cost at regular price it was close to $500. The tools all worked good and for that price I didn't care that some of them had a little rust, dust or had been used in the store a couple of times.

That is an unbelievable deal! I have the same welder and have ran well over fifteen 10lbs spools of .035 flux core through it and it still works like new. People really tend to slam the little 110V migs but they are extremely portable, will weld very light material and with proper prep, technique and patience will weld up to 3/8" reliably. I also have a Lincoln tombstone for the heavy stuff but the mig is almost always my weapon of choice. You will be amazed at how easy it is to use.

Darryl: the welder I got isn't a MIG... just a wire welder. I guess you could buy the optional stuff and get a gas tank to convert it to MIG, but I am not ready for that yet! I would like to be able to weld aluminum, and maybe some day I will go for that. With what I saved, I suppose the needed equipment would be affordable.
I got as far as loading the wire and making sure the feeder works... it does. I just guessed at the roller pressure setting and tightness of the wire spool, and will be curious to learn if the roller pressure makes much difference. I am curious why the speed rate goes to 10 (which really spits that wire out) when 2 or 3 seems to be the max rate for everything listed? They may use the same system for many machines. Lincoln was kind enough to send me the "How to Weld" DVD that was missing. The face shield wasn't there, either, but I have two hoods from my old stick welder. Other than that, I just need some metal and simple projects to start practicing.

4shorts: I really enjoy opening the Tractorbynet and finding some posts by you! The Ironworker series was typically entertaining. It is obvious that you both love what you do and spend untold hours every day doing it.
I am sending the Ironworker link on to my retired teacher brother in law, who has a small mill, lathe, other small metal working and woodworking tools, and even a small welder, all set up in the basement of his Brooklyn Brownstone (in the very heart of genteel NYC) where he fabricates stuff as needed. He'll appreciate your shop!

Thank you sir for your kind remarks on my TBN threads. I'm both happy and humbled to know that some folks like yourself enjoy reading them. Tell your brother in law I said hello

What a great deal, you will be pleased with the welder I`m sure
