Yanmar 2000B & Skat Trak 1300D skid steer
While bushhogging down a steep trail through the woods in low gear I suddenly started speeding up with little ability to steer! The cause? The AG wheels had lost traction and were skidding along the dry trail! Pucker factor of 8! Had to hit the throttle to regain traction and then picked a higher gear with light brake apllication. Can't use the engine compression like I was doing. Learn something every day, but still alive to tell the story!

Put it in 4WD and you won't have that problem.

Jerry, I thought that too, but then wondered if it was an older 2wd tractor.

So coyote, can you give us some more detail. What make model and configuration of tractor? Where you running at pto speed in low gear? Etc.

It was on a Yanmar 2000 2WD. Running in low range, 2nd gear about 1800 RPM at low PTO speed. The weight was just too much and it started skidding down the hill, only about 3-4 feet before I corrected it but whew! Scary!

Can still happen if in 4wd, and is worse when it does. Dry leaves are pretty slick and gravity sometimes overcomes all traction that you have. It is definately a pucker factor thing.
I have one hill that I can go up or down, but cannot stop on at all, going downhill, too much weight and gravity !

It lower the chance of a slid to a very small chance. Even in leaves and going down hill, the main reason that a tractor slides is because of weight shift. The leaves magnifies the problem. The rear wheels are unloaded and that is where all of the braking is while in 2 WD. That makes it really bad. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
All of this may be academic, if his Yanny is 2WD. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

If a slide starts when going downhill in 4wd, your behind is more likely to pass your front end than if in 2wd.

I would disagree based on some experiments we did in college on vehicle dynamics.

The test was to take a soap box derby type car on a 'slippery' incline and let the car start down and then lock the front or back wheels. If you lock the back, the ends swap... if you lock up the fronts, the car slids striaght down the ramp. My thoughts are that if you lock up the rears on a tractor, the end would come around, where if you lock up all four, than its just like a sled down the hill, but pointing the right direction.

Or maybe I'm wrong...

... you can tell I didn't learn to spell in college...

Don't worry.. only the real nit-pickers point out spelling and grammar errors.. unless you message is just completely uninteligible.

I type fast and make a good deal of typo's.. I rarely go fix them as long as the passage is legible.

Like I said.. only those that can't refute your statement other than by picking it apart will point out those sort of things.
