Would a tooth bar be worthwhile on a sub-cut FEL? Or am I just asking the little guy to do too much? I don't have a BH - can't justify it.

The work planned is some bull brush removal. Not a large amount, just road width and a hundred feet long, cleaning out some under growth in the woods, and removing sod to make more garden space.

I'm new at this and really don't have a good feel for what the sub-cut can and cannot do. I don't want to hurt it, and I can be very patient when working slowly.

I think that a toothbar is much more important on smaller, lighter tractors. On a heavier tractor, the weight of the front end is often sufficient to dig ok whithout one. My JD 4120 does real good without one but it is on the extreme upper end of CUT size and weight. The heavy front end will sink the bucket right down into even dry, hard ground. The lighter the tractor, the more help you need to dig and all that I hear says that a toothbar helps a lot.

b177, yes, definitely improves grubbing behavior. However, I think you'd do better removing sod w/o the toothbar - - I just did a little & it went OK.

I just put one on my L3300. the differance in digging is amazing. If your digging the toothbar will make it easier to dig. i know mines not a sub-cut but the smaller and lighter the tractor the more differance you'll see. It will not put more load on your tractor it actualy make it work less for digging. Mine is made by markham there's alot of people on here that have them. a search will show alot of good reveiws and there a whole lot cheaper than anyone else.

I have a small Yanmar that has an industrial type bucket on the loader with teeth. I find it very helpful for digging.

I got a toothbar put on my Kubota BX23 the day I bought it - the only time it comes off is when I am using the bucket the clear the driveway in the winter. The toothbar makes all the difference in the world in digging performance - and you won't hurt the tractor by using it with a toothbar :)

just curious, are there different configurations or shapes to toothbars? if wanting to push up brush and overgrowth, a wedge shape to snag and push up vs dig up might be useful, any webs sites of types toothbars out there? agh
