Toothbars for FEL\'s

I've read a few posts about people having toothbars on their FEL and I think they look great. My question is why do they cost so much? I've not seen one up close but it does'nt seem like there is much to them.Looks like they would be worth about 100.00. Fill me in on the reason for the 275.00 price tag. I must be missing something. I would like to have one but I think I will look for a used one. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

<font color="blue"> "why do they cost so much?" </font>

Don,

This answer could apply to that question about virtually any item made and sold; They cost that much because that's what the free market economy has determined to be the price at which the greatest number will be both produced and purchased.

At $200, more people would buy them but fewer would make them and be able to sell them so an oversupply of buyers would create a situation which would drive the price upward (to around $275).

At $400 lots more people would want to make and sell them because of the profit potential. Unfortunately, there wouldn't be enough buyers around at that price to buy all of them produced so the sellers would have to cut their prices to sell their inventory (to around $275).

Isn't Econ 101 fun? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

I made my own, and if memory serves me correctly, it cost around $100 in material. That's no labor, welding electrodes, grinding wheels, tool costs, electricity, WAGES, profit, overhead, etc. I took several hours to do it. If you're handy and either weld or have a bud who does and owes you a favor, make one. If not, the prices that have been talked about here really aren't that bad....................chim

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

My toothbar cost 275. Knowing how useful it is now, I would have paid double. In my honest opinion, it costs less than it is worth. If you have any kind of digging, root removal, brush removal, large rock removal, or little kids to scare, a toothbar makes you life a whole lot easier. I was able to get annoying little stumps from 1-2 inch saplings out with ease. Without it, those stumps would have been a pain. I could have gotten the job done without it, but it makes it so easy, its a no brainer.

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

I echo the value of the toothbar. Bought mine from Carver, and it fit the bucket like a glove, and has been very sturdy. I couldn't imagine working without one, especially to clear small brush and saplings by digging them up by their roots.

I've attached a picture, which shows it clearly. I took the picture to actually show the chain hooks on the bucket, but the toothbar is in plain view.

I'll agree with chim,
We sell tooth bars built by WR long, and if you figure material and labor, overhead, the price is not that bad.

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

I paid $225 for my 72" bolt on toothbar. Looks very close to the one in the previous post.

$275 is in the ballpark. My dealer may have passed on the cost since it was purchased with the tractor.

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

That $225 is the lowest price I've heard for even a 61" bucket, much less a 72" outfit. I spent just under $300 on a toothbar for my 61" bucket delivered to my door and think it could be the best $300 I've spent on anything for my tractor.

I think once you use a toothbar the price seems like a bargain whatever you paid, though. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

Well I just installed my toothbar today.I had to wait 3 weeks because my dealer who swore it would fit my bucket and it didn't had to order the right one.I got a Woods brand for my 66" bucket and I paid 300.00 for it.I don't know how much time I'll have it on as it's been pretty wet around here and winter's just around the corner. It wasn't a big deal to put on as I stepped up to a 3/4" bit. It's a good fit with 2 washers between the outer bracket and bucket edge.I can't wait to see what difference it will make in digging.

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

Donny,
Mine was $270 delivered for a 54" bucket.
I wouldn't be without it for a minute /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Here's a link on the install, at least my version. Took under an hour. Less than an hour for a lifetime of happiness /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

Bought mine from Carver's. Emailed them a request for info on a Sunday afternoon, had a response by email from them before 8 am on Monday, had it the following Monday, fits like a glove. $310.00 shipped to Kansas from North Carolina (66").

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

My 54" was $299 from Carver's including shipping. It is worth every penny in my estimation. I can now dig so much better with my loader than before. It's like getting a couple-sizes bigger tractor/loader for only $300.

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

All of the "storebought" toothbars I've seen are mounted with two bolts. Follow their lead if you do decide to make your own. While toothbars are worth their weight in gold for a lot of things, they are worse than worthless when you want to move snow, crushed stone or mulch. The two bolts allow you to have the best of both worlds........................chim

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

I just built one that looks just like the boughten ones as I took a lead from Chim (By the way thanks Chim /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) and ordered the shanks, teeth, and even the mounting cutting edge from Binkley & Hurst in PA. Mine was for a 48" bucket and I invested ~$200 including paying a friend $50 to weld it together.

They sold me the FFC Shanks with replaceable teeth attached with roll pins and the cutting edge. Shipped it to me in NY for about $140. They have a few types of the shanks, so if you go this route you may want to inquire about the options.

I dealt with Kevin in the parts department and he was very helpful in getting me exactly what I wanted. He even faxed pictures of a few options so I was sure what I was getting.

I highly recommend them for great service and overall helpfulness. Thanks again Chim.

I would post pictures, but our camera is broken and haven't decided to fix or buy new yet.

I used it a couple weekends ago to dig up my septic and it worked like a dream compared to the rototiller and shovel the last time /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Everyone was right about how much better it digs with the toothbar. I dug a few times over the Summer without one as I debated on spending the $300 to buy one. Well when I new I needed to dig up the Septic, it became obvious I better build or buy so I built.

Good luck with your decision,

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

I purchased a toothbar from Carver; the ad said it would take three to four weeks to deliver. It arrived 8 days after I ordered it, fit perfectly, and works beyond my expectations. I paid $259 plus $30 for UPS delivery. I consider it a bargain.

Re: Toothbars for FEL\'s

Can't wait to try out my new toothbar, but I blew out a front tire and am waiting for a replacement. Got mine-a Woods med. duty, plenty beefy, for $229 plus shipping from Landsdowne-Moody in Houston. Jason Collins was very knowledgeable & helpful.
