My JD Green 1401d that I just got has a broken bolt in the plate that holds not only the seat on but also has the 3pt toplink bracket welded to it in the rear above the PTO. This plate has four bolts and it appears to be bolted to the three point lift pump housing on top of the transmission. I saw another post where someones tractor broke some bolt holes because of the three point top link stress. Anyone experience any problems with strength of this type of 3 pt toplink mount, it looks like some of the weld is broken also and was wondering if I should reinforce it somehow. I don't have a Digital Camera or scanner so I cannot post a picture.

By all means, look at RobF's photo of his plate. It could save you a lot of headaches, and make yours a better machine. I built one, also, but I like his design better.

If your topplate hasn't broken out yet, take a look at the bolts and make sure they are long enough to use up all of the threaded surface. One of the photos I saw looked like there was 1/4 to 1/2" of threads left below a broken out piece. Maybe these things just need longer bolts if you catch them soon enough.

Are those bolts supposed to be grade 8 hardened? Could someone have substituted soft bolts?

Seems to me that you'd rather shear a bolt that snap the casting on the housing - i'm no mechanical engineer. I'lk look at my stock bolts and see what grade they are...

I wondered if the damage to the transmission housing in the other post happened because the bolts got loose? It might be that you will want to use some locktite blue. The thing to avoid is damage to the casting.

When I removed the other bolts that were not broken it looked like there was some old factory thread lock compound still on them and they kinda popped like when you remove a bolt with locktite so maybe I should put some new locktite on, thanks for the suggestion.

In my case the bolts were not loose. The problem was a little physics lesson in which a tractor rolling backwards in neutral is stopped by a manure pile, which the operator as attempting to move to a garden with a pond scoop. I really hadn't wanted to explain this aspect of the episode too much...
