Found this weedeater at a garage sale saturday. It was like new for $25.00. She said it was hard to start. Got it home, pulled the spark plug, checked compression. 150 psi told me that was good. Spark seemed ok because it was trying to run when I tried to start. It sounded as it was starving for fuel. Check fuel vent, filter in tank, and finally pulled the carb apart. All looked good. I think I am leaning buying a gasket set for the carb and taken a second look. Maybe there is a tiny hole in the diaghram or something. Usually I do not have any problems fixing small engines but I have to say this one is kicking my butt!

I don't know anything about the Toro string trimmers, but I noticed you mentioned a fuel filter in the tank. I have a Mantis tiller with the fuel filter in the tank and that filter has hardened and quit letting the fuel through after sitting too long a couple of times. I have a new spare filter, but haven't needed it yet. I simply take the old one out, give it one short blast of compressed air, reverse direction and all is well again.

Before you get into the carb again, look at the spark-arresting screen in the muffler. If that is carboned up, the engine will not run at anything above an idle,if at all, and be hard to start. If you find it carboned, take it out and pour a little gasoline on it and set 'er off. After it has burned out, a wire brush and a little compressed air will finish the job ;)

Speaking of weed trimmers.

Have any of you guys seen the weed eater powered by a propane bottle, small screw in type? Don't know how long it will last. You have to think, very little maintenance on this one. Just check the oil. . It has to be the cleanest burning weed whacker around. I believe it was in Lowe's. It is also a 4 stroke unit.

The fuel line might be cracked btween the carb and the tank.

I think spark is my problem. It seems to provide very little spark. I ordered one of those universal ignition modules from Trimmer Universal Ignition Module. It does try to run. I just think it is very weak. At $12.95 I thought if I am wrong I can always use it for something else. The OEM was $59.00. I have a multitude of small engines. Also...I remembered that the spark plug was wet with fuel so I think fuel is not the problem...but the exhaust could be clogged. I have been down that road.

One thing to always remember with small engines. You need 3 major things.

a. spark
b. compression
c. fuel

Missing any one of these your done!

Went to use leaf blower last year I think. Problem. Finally found dirt dobbers had clogged the exhaust. Had all that was needed but, air.
