Toro Groundsmaster 325D hard starting

looking for ideas, picked up a 325D last winter, the unit when it is running is strong, no smoke or odd noises from the 3cyl motor, problem is starting, regardless if the glow plugs are used it cranks for ever till it fires, there is water drips from exhaust but its not from the rad, no antifreeze odor,


any ideas? compression could be down but its not lacking power

Are the glow plugs hot?

yes, glow plugs are new and usually run them 45 seconds before cranking, crank for 2 mins and finally fired up

Fuel issue maybe, does it have an electric fuel pump?

darn near every GM I've ever had the pleasure of coming behind someone else, has had the mechanical lift pump replaced w/ an electric.
In most cases, its warranted.. meaning the original lp was no good. which tells ME something.. Personally I've never changed 1 out.. its always done before I get there..
& the problem is narrowed down to the injection pump.
Loosen the bleed screw AT the inj. pump inlet & spin the engine.. GOT FUEL? IF NOT, the problem lies from the inj. pump BACK to the tank.. no delivery. It "could be" the valves in the lift pump, weather mechanical OR electric are bad??
IF you have immediate fuel AT the inj. pump INLET.. the problem "could be" a slow control rack.. not allowing the pump TO PUMP??
Loosen the lines AT the injectors.. & try to start the engine.. Does fuel IMMEDIATLY start to spray?? IF SO, move to compression test.

Any hoses on the fuel system? Replace them if they are old.

quick update, took the line to the injector housing, when the key is turned lots of fuel, it has a electric pump, still when cranking for 60 seconds no sign of smoke white or black, still the slow drip of water from exhaust. have to loosen the injector lines and confirm fuel there when cranking tonight, ran out of time last night
