TORSION DAMPER JD 4310

My 4310 has a bad vibration, mostly around 1700+ rpm. I pinpointed the torsion damper and just wanted to see if anyone can help me verify that it is the problem. The springs in the damper are loose- around 1/4 in. empty space. If you shake the damper back and forth the springs rattle freely. I assume these springs are supposed to be tight? Anyone else have a similar problem?

The springs in the dampers on my 4300s were decidedly NOT loose. JD had a lot of
problems with the damper when the 4x00s were new. Mine had both replaced
under warranty before I got them. I believe the dampers did not change with the
4x10s, but do a part # comparison on JDParts.com to be sure.

THANKS, nice 2 hear from someone who has done it before. I just want to do it right the first time! Not nice to split the tractor more than once! Nice work on your projects- I need to do a mini excavator thumb for a friend. Took a look at the ones you did - tell me this - do you see a big advantage to hinge the thumb on the boom rather than using the bucket's pivot pin?

If you decide to make a thumb that shares the main pivot with the bucket pivot, then you will, of course,
have to lengthen that pin. What this does is greatly increase the bending stresses on that pin. This pin
on my hoe and MANY others is only 25mm in diameter, the usual size for these 7.5-ft hoes. I feel the
stresses are too great here, unless the pin is at least 30mm or 1.25". 1.5 inches would be better.

Furthermore, keeping a shared pin adequately greased is not easy if you think about it. I talked about this
in some of my thumb threads.
