My "Lil Sis" called yesterday and wanted me to help her in buying a new tractor. Boiled down to her needing a dealer locally and about 35 hp would be the right size.

So I go to checking out what's available in dealerships (1), what they offer and it's pedigree, and what the competition has in the same range just to get an idea as to does it pay to move out to a larger diameter circle to find a suitable brand or not.

Even in the one brand available locally, you can move around half a dozen types of 35 hp tractors with the amenities moving about.....like chasing your tail. When it was all over it was a matter of which amenities really mattered and which ones were just on the wish list. Sure glad I'm not buying.

Will say this, the brand was not Branson and you guys that whoop and holler about just how great your purchase was and how it stands heads above the competition was relayed to her. I said, my endorsement is based upon this site user's comments, not my experience with that brand. Waiting for her reply as to what she chose to do. So I guess I need to thank you on her behalf. Grin.

What she needs to do with the tractor will steer her into a model. Cutting grass mainly, with some light FEL work, the "B" series work better. If she need heavy FEL work (grapple or dirt work), she'll need a heavier frame. How much work she needs to do AND in what amount of time... If this is a commercial unit or just playing around on the weekends? How much land? What brand is local?

Oops, I see you were just thanking TBN... is there a thread that she has that you can link to?h

Methinks the thread is appropriately named.

I used to just say "the answer is always Kubota" (excuse me, Miata...) but heck, I think the right answer is to visit as many different dealers and "drive" as many likely choices as possible. Some dealers will feel right, some will be folks you don't care to visit again. Some tractors will feel right... you get my point. Price, and online research will help. I would think most brands should not required much, if any, dealer support, but there will be exceptions, so that should figure in somehow. But, like others have just said, what she will be doing with her new tractor is paramount in deciding which one. Never personally purchased a new one, but there are a lot of good machines out there, from what I have read.

There may be some simple rules of thumb:

If your family always buys GM/BMW/Audi products over Ford/Toyota/VW, then buy a JD tractor.
If your family always buys Ford/Toyota/VW then Kubota tractor
If your family is less brand conscious and more of a bang for the buck type who buy Subaru/Hyundai/Kia, then Kioti, Mahindra, LS tractors will suit
If your family likes quirky brands like Mitsubishi or Suzuki cars then Branson or TYM
If your family loves Yugos then Belarus

There are a few subdivisions though. If you buy a Camry over a Lexus equivalent then L series Kubota over L Grand. If you buy a Toyota pickup then M series
If you buy an Escalade over a Suburban then R series over E or M series JD

If your family drives a Miata then Powertrac or other articulating tractor

Check dealership reviews in your area as well. Just because the machine is reliable, doesn't mean the people your gonna rely on to fix it are ;) I won't purchase green in my area because of past dealings with there service department.

Our family buys Chevy, Toyota and VW... and PowerTRac, Simplicity and Toro. ;)
