I Just purchased a used dk35 last week which is not only my first tractor but the first one I have ever operated.

It seems like I have to push the brakes much harder than I would think is necessary. Is it just the nature of the beast or does something sound out of the ordinary?

I would have someone else try the brakes who was more seat time. If the brakes are being compared to a modern car or truck with power brakes, the tractor would be "harder". As the tractor is used anything would be possible. Brakes on equipment usually last a fairly long time. Find a friend and get the second view point.

I have the same problem on my dk40 compared to my neighbor's tc30.
The tc30 will lock the tires up with ease, and my tractor would barley hold itself on a steep hill with me stading on the brake!
The parking brake will not hold it on much of a hill and it's adjusted pretty tight.
I modified the levers which helped alot, but still not like the tc30, I'll post a pic to show you what I did

I removed this lever from both sides and drilled a new hole aprox 1"closer to center (pivot) which gives the pedal more mechanical advatage at the expense of more travel which isn't a big deal. You will have to readjust the pedal height after doing this. It made a good bit of difference on my dk40, good luck!

Try spaying some lubricant in the brake rocker shafts where they go through the rear axle brake cases. They get sticky where the shaft goes through the casting. Also, there are grease zirks on the brake control shafts under the floor boards. Make sure they are greased.

Thanks for the tips.

My brakes had to be adjusted as well, after about 200 hours. Dealer swung by and knocked it out back when it was under warranty.

My 45 brakes don't do so well on hills, but I drop my bucket alot which stops it dead.
