How high does that thing go? I would not go up any height in a lift that did not have the cylinder safety devices found on commercial lifts.
Possibly an accumulator would help with the jerkiness.
I would go flow control before using a needle valve. Someone installed a needle valve on my Kubota (Bradco) backhow swing cylinder and I hate the way it operates. It's dead slow or no effect at all in adjustment. And cavitates!
