I have a 9ft pull type JD Van Brunt grain drill I will be taking home in the very near future. It has been sitting up for several years under a barn. I am going to grease all fittings and lubricate. The drive back to my house is probably 2-3 miles. Does anyone have any advice or is there anything in particular I need to do to the grain drill before I make the trip home?

Pull the wheels (check the tires for rot and pressure) and pull the spindles and make sure they are greased and bearings intact. If on public roads, a SMY reflective triangle is required as is rear flashing amber lights. I use the self contained battery powered LED flashers (amber) ones myself. Magnetic mount, self contained.

Nothing worse that going down the road and having a rotted tire let go or a bearing seize. Under 20 mph always. Farm tools aren't designed to pull at road speed.

I am actually replacing a rotted tire right now on it. That is what has been holding me up on getting it. I have the new tire, just need to put it on. The other tire has recently been replaced.

I'd be checking the wheel bearings, farmers overlook them all the time. I always inflate my tires to the maximum rated sidewall pressure too. Fully inflated tires roll much easier.

I am reading where people recommend removing "3 bolts on each hub" to disengage the chain to where only the wheel and bearings turn. Has anyone done this?
