Towing new trailer home

A good friend of mine got arrested for "mis use of plates" back when we were in school. ( I had to go bale him out !) He borrowed a trailer and the owner had mixed the plates. Probably didn't help that the guy riding with him was throwing snowballs at the light bar of the cop car.

Ya think? :D

Like I said, I do this monthly. Carry the bill of sale and do not give them a reason to pull you over and you will be ok.

Any reasonable or officer will give you a grace period to pull it home.

Around here the way it works is you go to the court house and have a vin check done with the Title. They then send a officer to your home or where the trailer is and they fill out the "Out of State" paper work you get off the BMV web site or at the BMV. Yes, its BMV here. Bureau of Motor Vehicles. You then take the paperwork to the BMV and new title/registration plus plates are issued.

I have done it twice this month alone.

I think CT requires all out of state purchased trailers (new or old) to be inspected. I have driven home with no plate but that was within CT and I had my wife follow me in her vehicle so a police car could not get between her and the rear of the trailer. I have also used a friends trailer plate to transport a wood chipper from MA to CT, no issues but not legal.

Like another poster said biggest thing is not to draw attention to yourself, obey speed limits etc. so the police do not have a reason to stop you.

Thanks, for all the replies, I tried to talk to a real person at the CT dmv yesterday, but was unsuccessful. There was no way I was driving down to PA to pay and get a bill of sale without pulling the trailer back. I made it down early this am and decided not to put any plates on it. I towed it back to CT without issue. I'll post some pics on my other thread tomorrow. I'm a bit tired from the 4 hr trip down and the 8hr trip back. Should have known better on a holiday weekend.

If your coming through the dirty jersey and you have a borrowed plate, just make sure it is up to date. Some police cars in n.j. are equipped with sensors that read every visible plate and run them for vaild reg and ins. I have 2 bri mar trailers and one of the registrations is expired so i have been putting the vaild one on which ever trailer i'm pulling, till i update the reg.

The state's need to make this stuff universal so there's no gray area. It also needs to be administed with some common sense. As one poster said, I was supposed to drive down to Pa, pay the owner, get the bill of sale, drive home, go to DMV, get temp tag, drive back down to PA, return with trailer get Fed Dot inspection, then get vin check at DMV. Then I could finally get the normal registration for a year. It almost forces you to get extorted by the local dealers. It's ridiculous how much it ends up costing just to register the thing. It's almost $300 bill between taxes an inspections alone. Add gas and tolls($18 on the GeoWash by the way) and it's almost a futile effort.

Most states will sell you (as an out of state buyer) a 30-60 day temp tag for a vehicle purchased in their state, but that requires you to find a DMV office (or other place where they sell them) and get there when they are open.
Also FYI: NY and MA to not honor each others temp tags for some stupid reason.

More reason to standardize the rules for this type of transaction. The sad part is this is our tax dollars at work.
