Toying with buying a new tractor, what would be the right choice?

30-35 hp (engine) tractor with 4WD, hydrostatic tranny, power steering, FEL with 6-ft wide bucket, chain hooks on the bucket, dual hydraulic rear remotes, rear tires filled with Rimguard. Add skid steer quick attach option to the FEL if you intend to purchase QA implements in the future.

Other considerations: sunshade attachment for the ROPS. Cab tractor if ultimate in comfort is what you want.

Select a tractor dealer near you (50-100 mile radius) who has decent service and parts department.

Good luck

What he said, but in all honesty, any good tractor in the 25- 35 hp range with 4WD would work, you just need to fit you budget with the need vice want. I have a 6 acre property with pasture, woods and pond, with a 1/8 acre lawn. I have two tractors, skidsteer and Cat loader but I use the 27 hp tractor for 90% of the jobs with cutting, clearing, and maintaining. Rent if you need something bigger, it is cheaper in the long run.

I think a ztr is not the best of options. He can improve his mowing with a tractor (speed) . . but with 3 existing working mowers and little money . . it would seem that being focused on his other needs is a much greater priority. As you mention . . a pull behind or belly mower will cover more than 46" that he has now.

But I'm suspicious that his terrain is not all grass. 3 or 4 hours cutting with a 46" deck doesn't equal 6 acres. And honeysuckle etc. sounds like fallow land not cut . . Either rough ground, woods, or hill.

I should have clarified, no not all 6 acres is grass. i would say about 3.5 acres is grass, the rest is overgrown pasture, and about 1.5 acres of woods. The woods are on a small incline, but everything else is flat/rolling.

my BX mows the 1.5 acres around my place in half the time it took with my riding mower. Rider was 42", and my kubota is 60". The ZTR may be faster, but anything is an improvement over a MTD rider.

Okay, a different take, though a previous post did mention to consider "used".

If you don't have the cash saved to buy outright, and payments might be a burden, my suggestion is buy used. While most small tractors hold value very well, just like when buying a new car, there is a significant initial depreciation when the tractor leaves the lot, and savings can be had when buying a "newer" used tractor.

Well built mid to older tractors can represent a super good deal. If you follow the local paper ads, Craigslist and eBay, there will be the occasional "smoking good deal" - - just be patient and check really often as the good ones don't last long. Unfortunately, there will also be come-on priced scams. The scams are easy to spot, though, as the price will most often be stupid low, and if you respond to the ad, invariably the tractor will be somewhere where you cannot see it, but they will ship it to you and you can refuse if if not happy and they'll refund your money (right!). They will sometimes say that payment will be to an "escrow service" (bogus) of one type or another.

The *real* deals will be local or semi-local, will have a phone number, and will welcome you to come and check out the tractor.

A year and a half ago, I bought a 2008 Kubota BX24D with 90 hours, backhoe, front loader, factory canopy, & box scraper, $11,500. By the time I went to pick it up, she had 7 more people who wanted to buy it, one offered $500 more than her asking price. Her asking price was at least $3,000 more than what that tractor sells for used. Good deals are out there.

Financing used?? Use your house as collateral if need be, but credit unions will often loan on used equipment.

I'd stay at 26 horse or less to avoid emissions garbage installed on higher hp tractors.

Kubota B2601 or L2501 would be the two tractors I would recommend.
Latest models. No DPF, no regen, no BS. Old school simple diesels that will give you no trouble.
