Yeah, besides being my only real choice for towing 20 to 25k, diesels can be fun too. That "old" 12v Dodge I had was as much of a toy for me as it was for work. This 6.0 Ford runs fine, but it doesn't run anything like I had that Dodge running. There again, I haven't spent but about $400 on upgrades on the Ford and on the Dodge....well, we won't talk about how much I spent on mods for it.
I used to like to pick on those V8 Mustangs with it. I mean, c'mon, how many people in a 'hot rod' Mustang even remotely thinks a clanging, rattling 6 cylinder diesel Dodge could even come anywhere near keeping up with them? It was almost worth it (the expense for all the mods) to see the expressions on their faces when a big huge 4X4 dually Dodge 6 cylinder just outran them!
Having 4 tires in the back helped it a lot in launching off the line. I never ran propane or nitrous, but I did end up with twins under the hood before I got rid of it. Although very expensive, it made a HUGE difference.
No war even considered with your pickup. I'm just pleasantly surprised and pleased with the performance of mine. Before I do any other mods to it I'm told by my tech that I need to have him install ARP head studs. I'll defer to his expertise on that matter. But, hey, he does owe me a bit of favor. I might go ahead and get those studs installed anyway so I'll be ready for any future mods. I never plan on having my 6.0 4X4 crew cab DRW running in the mid 12 second range like this guy 2004 Ford F350 Dually crew cab 4X4 1/4 mile trap speeds 0-60 - DragTimes.com , but adding a cold air intake and larger exhaust to what I currently have (with the head studs added of course) apparently will put my big heavy truck into the mid 13 second range based on dozens of guys running that exact same setup. I can't find any times for guys running crew cab 4X4 3500 Duramax runs, but I have found several Duramax 2500 runs. It looks like the 6.6 Duramax in a 2500 pickup running Edge Hot Juice/Attitude and everything else stock (similar performance mods as I currently have to my 6.0) run about the same times as me; around 14.2 quarter mile times 2001 Chevrolet CK2500 Truck LS 1/4 mile Drag Racing timeslip specs 0-60 - DragTimes.com . I'm sure that with your intake and exhaust you'd be running faster times. What I feel is best for me is those guys with the 6.0 like mine who have been flogging those trucks with that setup for years without any problems with the stock transmission or any engine failures. That's good enough for me. Mid 13 second runs are pretty darn good for 8000 pound pickups!
