I don't know if any one has posted these yet, but someone sent it to me. I just though I would past it along. Don't have any other details other than the photo.

It doesn't get much worse than that!!! What's really amazing is how often things like that happen. Every driver who transports equipment has told me stories of it happening all the time. The last guy I was talking to told me he hit an overpass with a motor grader. He said they are the hardest to load and get under the height limit because of there cabs.

Something similiar happened around here a couple of years ago. They were knowingly hauling an excessive height excavator. But these guys thought ahead and decided it would not be best to haul the equipment..............unless they left someone running the excavator to lower the boom at underpasses. Well, I'm not sure why or how, but he didn't get it lowered in time for one bridge. I'm not sure they covered that topic in the DOT handbook :D

Had a dump truck play chicken with a bridge a few month's ago around here. Empty bed went up and the driver didn't know it. Let's just say the dump truck bed didn't win and was completly torn off the truck.

I don't have allot of experiece with dump trucks. I've driven a few ten wheelers and own a small single axle gas one. I've never heard of a bed that could just go up on it's own. It takes a few steps to get them in the air.

I think that that driver had to have forgotten to lower it and had to be so distracted or maybe under the influence of something to be driving around with the bed up in the air and not know it.

When the bed is up, the trucks are very top heavy and every turn is greatly exagerated. Just driving away from the dump pile causes the truck to sway all over when the bed is still up. This guy had to be REALLY DISTRACTED!!!

Not really. Apparently the empty truck had just unloaded a load of blacktop. People on the jobsite said they saw the bed going down and the driver take off and then saw the bed going back up. Driver made it about 1/8 of a mile from the job site when the bed hit the overpass. It had gone up about 3 feet.

Was it preventable, sure it was. Was the driver in a rush, probably so, most dump truck drivers are since they get paid by the load and not mileage.

Actually there are quite a few dump truck beds that hit bridges every year in the US. I can think of 6 that I know of.
