Track machine mulchers

   / Track machine mulchers #2
I do not have direct experience but last month I hired a gentleman to mulch down trees and brush that I took down last year. He had the >100hp Gehl skid steer with added tracks and fitted to a Fecon Bull Hog(which is what I believe the ASV to be). The high flow hydraulics are essential. He found during the first summer that he had to add a hydraulic fluid cooling system(placed on cab top) for the warmer days. He is a hearty fellow and did not have AC in the cab.....older wimps like me would go for the AC. He did mention the ASV and another aftermarket modded tracksteer might be better choices than the Gehl setup he has. I didn't see any problem in him getting through my piles. You might check forestry discussion boards. These things are a bit pricey for my taste and I can rent the Bobcat - Bull Hog mix for the week or month.....Cheers

Also, this has been discussed on here before as I remember. If the search function actually works today, try ... Fecon, Timber Ax, Carbide Cutter. Seems like one member owned one and one was going to buy ...

This thread is timely, as I am doing research into the same thing.

I logged my property last summer, and the logging crew left a mess. I hired a track hoe last fall to dig stumps, and a guy with a dozer to pile them for burning, but they ate through my budget rather quickly, with less than satisfying results.

I would like to rent a machine to do the cleanup, and have been investigating a mulcher. Some brands that I have looked at are Gyro-Track, Fecon, Rayco, Magnum, and Tush Hogg. I next plan to contact the companies to see if they have customers in my area with equipment to rent or for hire.

Do any members have experince with any of these machines? One of my neighbors hired a guy with something called a wood gator, but it stayed broke down for more time than it worked.

I have just purchased the 100hp ASV and a mulcher head attachment. I debated on it for a while, but it is something I will enjoy doing. I just hope I can generate some income with it. From all of my research, these machines and heads are about the best way to go if someone wants to clean up some property. They are amazing! Wish me luck!

If you don't have a coolant temp. guage, get one. Be sure to blow the radiator out 1-2 times a day, or every time you refuel. Also, drop the belly pans once a week and get out all the debri (pine straw will catch fire easily).
Do you have a brush guard? You need something sunstanial because you will back into trees.

I too considered this type of attachment. The majority of my jobs require leaving behind a clean site. If I were doing utility easements then this would be a good choice. Fenceline clearing might be a good market for it also.

For me it was a nice thought but it would not have produced the end result my customers desire.
