I have a Murray lawn tractor that I would like to inprove the traction I've heard of tire chains, wheel weights, tractor weights & liquid filled tires but don't know which is best or if you can over do it?

For a lawn tractor w/ turf type tires, I would think tire chains would the biggest traction boost.

Winter or summer traction? I have wheel weights I keep on year round, add chains in the winter for the snow blowing.

Yes, you can over do the weights. Not knowing what model you have, but I'm guessing that 50 pounds of wheel weights on each side would be about max. Remember that the tranny has to spin the wheels and the added weight does put a strain on the tranny in getting it up to speed AND slowing it down. Liquid in the wheels is good as it is not locked to the tires, it's free to slosh around eliminating most of the stress on the tranny.

I have ag tires and wheel weights on my 1450 Cub Cadet which I use to mow the lawn. People question the ag tires thinking they will damage the lawn; not true...I had more problems with turf tires spinning and "burning" the lawn...

IF you do end up spinning the ags, you WILL rip the lawn up...but for normal mowing, ag's work better IMHO....

What do you need the increased traction for? Recommendations will change depending on if you want more traction for snow moving vs. mowing on hills vs. garden work.
