I understand that most guys are getting 10 to 15% off list price on tractors. Should I expect the same discount off the implements and attachments I purchase with the tractor?

Maybe the guys are, but the dealership wouldn't budge on a used tractor for me. Is it because I'm a girl?

I would think that, considering all aspects, it would depend on the Dealer. He may or may not have the implements in stock. Or he may have a surplus of them. Just do your best "wheeling and dealing" and Best Wishes.

On tractors, dealers usually work from the bottom up, not top down. They take their actual cost of the unit, add frt. and set-up, delivery if any and then add their
desired profit back. Usually 10-12%. In the grand scheme of things, that's not very much. Not when you consider everything that profit has to help pay.

As far as implements, the average discount a dealer gets is 20% and 5-10% depending on their buying level. Then they may have freight or not. Then they have some in set-up. An average mark-up on implements is 15% which again isn't much. So usually 5-10% off list is all. There isn't a lot of profit in implements if they discount very much.

A used tractor is a different financial transaction... There are no monetary "incentives" from the manufacturer, etc.

That said - it's always a good idea to ask when buying if there's any "room" on the price or if they're "firm" on that number.

As well, shop the internet; several good sites have been listed here on TBN. They can give you a good idea on a "ballpark" price.

After a number of year's watching the buying experiences of folk's here on TBN; there are several notable elements to that process that have stood out - IMO:

The percentage of discount varies by locale. The northeast corridor, northern tier states (SD, ND, MT, WY) and many of the western states - have the most "tight fisted dealers". Mid west (IN, OH, PA, WI, MN) and southern states (GA, VA, TX, OK, KS) and west coast dealers are the most willing to "deal".

The percentage of discount varies by both tractor series and model. Lawn tractors and the smaller SCUT's and the "economy" models of smaller, mid and smaller Ag machines have the least margins and lower discounts. The "luxury" models of CUT's and Ag machines M series, Premium have a bigger margin and larger discounts, percentage-wise.

The percentage of discount has decreased during the current economic downturn. This is a real conundrum... Ag sales remain exceptional - production runs are at very high levels and deliveries are delayed. CUT's and SCUT and lawn tractor sales are down; but certainly not extreme - single digit decline. Expectations would be that the manufacturer's would be more receptive to prices softening. In lieu of price flexibility - they're attempting to bring buyer's into the showroom with favorable financing terms. Is that working...??

Unfortunately, the general observation of Canada sales is very similar to buying a tractor in upstate NY or CT or Vermont. They make those buffaloes "squeal" on every nickle!

Got a cousin in Indiana? :D

I doubt is because you're a girl. Used is more supply/demand driven. They know if it will sell quick or be there a long time. Plus if they have not had it a long time they have less insentive to deal. It's when you are buying the "mutt" in the back row you get the deals. Or they have had it on their lot "forever"

Did you shop online to see if the price was reasonable?

There's definitely a large regional influence in pricing. Around me it seems like some dealers price used tractors at pretty much what they're going to sell them for and budge very little if at all. New implements seemed to be the same way and new tractors seemed to have 5 - 10% room depending on the model. Like anything else it's worth what someone is willing to pay, so the dealers will price where they think they can sell it and move only if they need to.
