Good morning,

Here is a question for US sunny states tractor owners.
I live in the South of France and we have here a climate like you have in California, with hot summers and mild winters.
Most of people here buy rops tractors and no cab tractors because we don't have very cold winters (no snow).
But I am considering the interest of being protected from the dust and the heat when bush hogging in spring and summer.

What is the situation in US ? Do people who live in mild winter states buy Rops or cab tractors ?

Thanks for help,

Phil

California has some interesting weather....it is a pretty big state. It can be quite cool up north but like a desert in some areas. I never had a problem in the Kalafornia....or the Peoples Republic of Kalafornia :)

In Missouri summers are not very outside friendly. Even now in june we have upper 80's F for temps and 90% humidity....it will just get worse from there....100 F days and upper 90% humidity are just bad no other way to put it. I never had a Cali summer like I have here.

I would love to have a tractor with A/C, but for my uses I could not justify it.

I am sure others will chime in here.

And I am kidding about California.....a little ;)

If you want to be protected from heat, dust, cold, bugs, pollen ect. for sure purchase a cabbed tractor and make sure it has air conditioning/heat.

Many of our southern brethren buy cab tractors to stay cool, stop eating bugs and stinging insects, and quit breathing in dust and pollen. But many of us still have ROPS tractors as well. It is mostly a matter of money, although some mention tree limbs and getting on and off of the tractor many times as reasons for staying with a ROPS tractor. But is is mostly a matter of $$$.. :D

Around here it can be more than 100F and 90% humidity many days of summer. Even spring and fall time will see high 80's so I got my cab tractor for the hot weather but it is also very good for the cold and rain although I don't do a lot of work in the winter. Not enough snow here to bother with snow clearing. Just about every time I mow, I stir up either a bumble bee nest, wasp or yellow jacket nest. The cab keeps them away from me.

Avoiding heat, insects, dust, rain and even limbs whacking me is my reason for owning a cab. Small limbs can whack you pretty good without a cab and my cab is robust enough to bend them out of the way without damaging it.

As far as getting on and off, I cant see any difference in the difficulty of opening a door and climbing down the steps. My cabbed tractor is quite high (about arm pit height) so it takes 3 steps to get to the ground and having the door handle to hold on to is a plus.

I can't remember the last time I saw an open station tractor being used by a farmer, but for hobbyists like many if not most of us, you will find a mix and differing opinions. I live in the same state as Cherokee140 and my primary tractors are cab equipped, but we also own open station as my brother is often constantly getting on and off and working in woods etc. and a cab isn't practical.

A lot will be dependent on how many hours you will spend on one. Many put less than 100 hours a year on a machine, I put several hundred with some pretty long days. Age also matters or at least it did for me.

Good luck.

I agree most farmers/custom operators have cab tractors. I own 4 cab tractors to use in my custom hay baling venture.

Tractors come with cabs? Are you sure? :confused2:

Around here nobody uses cabs. I suppose because 1) they weren't available when the tractors were made, 2) they don't work well with all the trees at the edges of fields, and/or 3) they cost too much.

I think if anything, it's MORE important to have a cab in the hotter climates than colder climates. You can also dress properly in bitter cold snowy weather, but you can only cool off so much in the hot weather. I wouldn't be able to stand working in 100 degree heat and high humidity for very long, but I can work all day in the snow with proper clothing and my electric motorcyling gear :D

That being said, my next tractor will have a cab.

Well I can understand # 2 &3 but number 1 I don't think so unless you all have tractors over 45 year old. The first tractor I saw with a cab in NE Louisiana was in 1968.
