This guy lives down the road from our camp and I believe its the same person who owns a bed and breakfast place on 250 near the Tappen lake area. He has a large collection of John Deere tractors. Does anyone know for sure if it痴 the same person? 1st snow of the year in that area.

Fatal accident
12/7/07

By AMY GAREIS

News-Herald Staff Writer

A LOCAL man was killed late Wednesday when his tractor flipped over in snowy conditions.

According to the Carroll County Sheriff痴 Office, Harry A. Heavilin, 57, of 2144 Lodge Road, Sherrodsville, died around 6 p.m. when the tractor he was operating rolled on top of him.

Officials said Heavilin, originally of Cadiz, was apparently plowing snow down a steep asphalt driveway when it lost control on the slick surface. The tractor slide off the right side and struck a railroad tie placed along the edge of the drive. The vehicle then slid over a steep bank and overturned onto the driver, pinning him underneath. Heavilin died at the scene.

A neighbor reported the incident and sheriff痴 officials plus emergency crews from Dellroy and Sherrodsville responded to the scene. Workers had to secure the tractor before dismantling it to remove the victim.

An investigation is still under way.

Not sure if he owned a B&B, but he did work in the sales dept at a JD dealership in the New Philly area and went by the name Butch. He helped me when I was in the process of buying a tractor. I ended up with a Kubota, but he was a very nice guy and if JD would have been the choice, it would have come from him. I do know he was a Deere guy through and through. May well be the same guy, if memory serves, he had a few Deere's himself. Very sad story.

Sorry say it was Butch, The B&B must be his family. They have many tractors parked out in the pasture. A real treat to see on the way to our camp.

Wow. Sad indeed. Sounds like a great and interesting guy.

Does anyone know about ROPS? Seatbelts? I'm not asking in order to point fingers or moralize. Its just when you see this happen to someone with a lot of tractor experience it makes me wonder if it could happen to me.

I can see something like that happening. That snow can be quite dangerous. The temp has so much to do with it. Super cold and traction is OK, get a little slushy and it's a whole different game. I'm really surprised it doesn't happen more often. Once your off sliding sideways on a grade there is no stopping.

Here is the newpaper story:

Officials ID man killed in tractor crash
Saturday, December 8, 2007
BY Robert Wang
REPOSITORY STAFF WRITERMultimedia

DELLROY Carroll County Sheriff Dale Williams on Thursday identified a man killed the previous day in a tractor accident as Harry Heavilin, 57.

Heavilin was using his tractor to clear snow on his driveway in the 2100 block of Lodge Road shortly before 5:57 p.m. Wednesday, said Williams. The driveway was covered with a 都olid sheet of ice, Williams said, and had not been salted.

While riding down the very steep driveway, the tractor slid to some railroad ties by the driveway. When the wheels hit the ties, the tractor flipped over onto Heavilin on the bank by the driveway, killing him, said Williams. A neighbor saw what happened.

Contrary to an earlier report, the accident did not occur because the man drove the tractor onto a snow-covered bank that gave way, Williams said.

Heavilin痴 home is less than a half-mile west of Dellroy.

Williams said Heavilin is survived by a 47-year-old wife. The Carroll County coroner has already released the body to a funeral home in Cadiz, the sheriff said.

I agree. I started to slide sideways down a grade with my old Ford 1100 years ago while plowing snow that was over solid ice. I dropped my front end blade and rode it out . I had weighted R-1's and chains. I stopped when I hit a snow bank. I was lucky. Jay

Snow and ice are rarely an issue here. My concern, as always, is would it have been fatal with a ROPS and seatbelt. I am sure you can die in a tractor rollover even if there is a ROPS and seatbelt use. That's why I asked and that scares the heck out of me.

After reading the article I'd guess that he did not have his seatbelt on. Sounds like he got to sliding and hit the RR ties and was knocked off the tractor. At least he went out doing something enjoyed. Hopefully he ended up in the part of Heaven that has the 24 hr Deere dealerships on every corner.
