This is my first timber frame - summer 2009 - replaced the shed on back of garage so that the new tractor would fit. I wanted to store with roll bar in position - I reused the rafters, roof boards and metal. The timbers were cut from the woodlot and sawed by a band saw on site. Some of the construction process is shown. (along with a lunch break) The building is 10' x 14'.

Very nice. It must have been rewarding to do the timber frame construction. I have always wanted to do it but haven't ever got around to it. One thing for sure, it's not going to fall down!

Very nice, I always liked the looks of timber construction kind of a lost art. Are the joints doweled together? Would be nice to see a close-up of the tools used.

Really nice to see genuine timber framing still going on. I think it would be nice to see any photos you have of cutting those big tenons. Did you wedge them or use drawboring?

Was this foundation done the same way as your other ones?
Was it a rubblefoundation with a 6x6 burried in the stone above grade and then the frame of the timberframe itself is anchored into the 6x6?
Did you cut the in ground 6x6 before it was placed?
Did you notice any settleing of the foundation?
thanks

In general with the joints I put them together and then made adjustments as needed before boring the hole and pegging. I did some wedging to tighten braces after the frame was up.

The foundation was similar - two treated 2 x 6s were nailed together with a mortise at each post. The three pairs of 2x6s were the base for the 2" hemlock plank floor. With the floor secured it ties the foundation together. There is about 12 to 18" of crushed stone under the floor - the building hasn't moved so far. I put down some of the stone, then leveled and placed the 3 foundation pieces, then filled with stone and leveled even with the top. (I believe it would not move out of square considering the bracing and 2 layer siding) It is against the back of the garage which has 6 treated posts buried about 4 ft (like a pole barn).

I'll post a few photos of the tools I used - I also have a couple patterns I made to keep the cuttings similar. (haven't taken the photos yet so may be a couple days.)

Looks great and I think it would be fun to build. Never had the chance to work on something like that..
