seaweed is a great source of minerals and phytonutrients/enzymes. unfornately, here in the midwest, i have to buy it powdered by the bag, but i always mix about a cupful into every 6 cups of organic fertilizer.
if you're using fresh, be sure to rinse it first so you don't drive up the salt content of your soil. (unless planting salt tolerant veggies like asparagus).
i would imagine the whole pieces make a great mulch and supress the weeds pretty good.
