Hello and thank you everyone for helping me in my previous thread and the great welcome. I am making this thread to get more information on buying used tractors. If there is a thread with this information already(which I bet there is) please do not mind in posting the link. I tried searching this in the search tab but it does not show anything for some weired reason.

Since I am new to tractors in general and this will be the first time I buy one, I would like to know what I should be looking for when buying a used tractor.

. How many hours are tractors supposed to average a year? How can I know if tractor hours are too much for that tractor?

. When seeing and comparing tractors how can I tell if the tractor is in good condition?

. What should I look out for when buying a used tractor?

Any other suggestions and tips would be good. I am going to check out some tractors this week and would like to know what to do.

Thank you very much.

the hours that are put on a tractor can vary greatly.some put 50hrs a year on them.an some put 300hrs a year on them.
you look at the over all condition of the tractor.does everything work like it should.is the sheet metal in good shape.are the tires in good shape.
if you dont feel easy buying a tractor, look for a good dealer to buy from.

First, your profile states you're a farmer. Since you have no experience with a tractor, I'm assuming you don't really farm...yet.
So, the tractor (and responses you'll get in this thread) are quite dependent on what kind of farming you intend to do as well as how large a farm you have or will have.
So, tell us a bit more about what you intend to do for responses that will make some sense.
In any case, since you are not familar with tractors, I strongly suggest you buy from a dealer...a local dealer at that. If you must buy from a private owner, take someone with you that does know equipment.
For example, you ask "When seeing and comparing tractors how can I tell if the tractor is in good condition?" and you get an answer such as it should pull strongly, are you going to know what "strongly" means?
Hours on a residential use tractor...maybe 50-100 per year. The same tractor on a farm might accumulate hundreds or more.

Anyway, brother...more info from you (as far as specific intended use) will get better and more applicable responses from TBNers.

If you are going to buy a complex tractor farm size tractor, you might be better off going to a good dealer who is willing to work with a new owner.
If your looking for 2wd with no loader, no fancy transmission, then you can easily figure out how to test all the systems, look at the fluids, and look at the owner and figure out if its a good tractor or not.

I don't know if number of hours is a big deal or not. If its a good tractor with good maintenance then 5000hrs isn't terrible, but you have to expect to do some repairs eventually.

Anyways I think what type of tractor you're looking for, will change the answers to your questions.

What's type of tractor do you want and what usage are you going to do?
