Tractor vs tracked skid steer - rotary mowers.

2 questions:

1) what is faster for mowing right-of-way growth of 2-3 years?

2) what is the average speed for cutting on fairly rough terrain vs flat? 3 mph? 5mph? Looking for an average on mixed terrain.

I am trying to come up with a bid and need some more information. I have always used a tractor and bush hog but that was years ago and I don't really remember how fast it could cut. Plus I was working for someone and never had to price for myself.

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks, Ted

Now you're talking where my timberax would really shine. Areas that have been graded somewhat and mowed before thus not TO MUCH foreign debri. I could cut anything that small quickly.

Now that being said I really think large scale right-of-ways are alittle out of the scope of our tractors. That would be some serious waear and tear on a skid steer. I think there is a reason you see regular tractors mowing them.

Now if it were more overegrown then that would be to your advantage. But the tractors they use for that are not run of the mill tractors. They are the king kong of tractors, high H.P. and guarded against the world.

I thought that would be a good route also but the more I learn the more I'll leave that to the peolpe who want it and they'll leave the mulching to us.

But if you can make money at it give it a good try. Who knows I could be totally wrong and lossing good business!!! That would suck... Robbie

Tractor is the way to go if you'll be doing it regularly. Skid steers will work, but unless you have a reason to use one (really bad terrain, mostly) the tractor will be faster as a general rule.

Actually this has been being done by a tractor but the terrain can be rocky and steep. The company is unhappy with the present company and I have the oppurtunity to bid on it.

Robbie, I was thinking of using a deck mower since it is wider then the Timber Ax. The Brush Wolf come in a 101" wide cut, those extra inches add up after a day of mowing.

What MPH do you think you can do in lighter stuff with the Timber AX..6 mph?

This is the whole question...mph x width of cut = acres per day
