Hi,
Back in February of 2009, I bought myself a 60th birthday gift... a new 2009 John Deere 2305 TLB (tractor/loader/backhoe). I already had (and still have) a small 1965 John Deere 110 8 HP lawn tractor. Having recently retired and moved from city life to a 1.7 acre parcel in the country, I needed a bigger, more powerful tractor to deal with the woodlot (timber work) on the land, and the slope of the terrain. I have no intention of ever using this equipment for commercial purposes.
I retired from working in construction after 35 years, and during my working years, I had operated various froms of equipment, including an old tractor with a FEL (front end loader) and box blade on it. But, although I had been around a lot of them, I never got the chance to operate a backhoe.
The new JD 2305 TLB was delivered on my birthday, and after setting it up out back, I just had to 'dig with it'! Learning the basic operation of the backhoe took some time, and I quickly got to where I was somewhat comfortable with it. That being said, I also realizedthat I needed to get some form of proper instruction regarding tractor/loader/bachoe safety and operation. Not wanting to pay the required big bucks to go to a commercial school for that, I went to the Internet.
What I found was a 270-page manual of operating techniques for the tractor/loader/backhoe. This book has been a very valuable source of do's and don'ts for me. especially when it comes to operating techniques and safety. It's actually been adopted for training purposes by The International Union of Operating Engineers... it's that good!
At this point, I would like to recommend it to anyone who may feel the need to learn more about the safe operation, maintenance, and other things about their tractor with FEL (front-end loader), and/or backhoe. It has a very clear explanation what is safe and what is unsafe when operating the unit on various slope and grade angles, which is of particular importance for me, given the grade of my land parcel.
The $38.00 book is available at this link:
Tractor-Loader-Backhoe Safety and Training Book - Operating Techniques for the Tractor-Loader-Backhoe
While I'd also like to have their two "Tractor-Loader-Backhoe Safety Videos" also, the $195.00 asking price is bit too high for two 20-minute videos, as far as I'm concerned. I doubt that ther is anyting in the videos that's not covered clearly in the book. Then again, the old saying goes : "A picture is worth a thousand words". But then, there are a lot of photos and diagrams in the book too... There I go again, arguing with myself!
I have no affiliation of any kind with this company, I just want to share this information in the hope that it might help someone avoid a serious or fatal accident with their tractor/loader and/or backhoe.
Thank you for your time, Deerelirous
