Tractor Size for Snow Removal and other Chores

I find most of the posts quite amusing. You don't need a 60 hp tractor to blow snow. That is just insane, especially if you only have 4 feet of snow per season. If you are clearing mountain passes, in the rockies, it is a different story. The problem with a 60 hp tractor apart from the cost is that it will be big, awkward and hard to maneuver.

I live in big snow and brutal cold country. We get 15 to 30 feet of snow and I usually have to blow 30 to 50 times a year. My 30 hp Kubota is way more than adequate, irrespective of whether the snow is dry or wet. I don't care how deep the snow is, it can handle it. If the snow is deep, you go slower, or take smaller cuts each time, or better yet snow blow every foot or so if you have a big event. Below is a movie of my 30 hp Kubota B3030 in action moving serious snow.

You guys don't get any snow, do you? He he he. We sled up there and this year you had to be careful off trail with standard length sleds or you would get stuck. Our propane tank now has a flag on it so it can be found to fill it! Some don't understand what snow is. I laughed when some counties in New York got 24" of snow and shut everything down! 15 years ago that did not even make the news around here. We got 30+ inches in 4 or 5 hours one morning, that made for a busy day but still did not shut us down. And guess what we got by with plow trucks and walk behind blowers. A 30 hp tractor with a blower was unheard of back then. CJ

CJONE,

Where in Northern Michigan do you live? Most people consider anything north of Ludington - Northern Michigan.

I am about 8-10 miles north by north east of Kalkaska by Manistee Lake, dead center of a snow belt. I still actually have a couple of good snow piles left. We still don't get 1/2 to 2/3rds of what you guys get. I really like the area you live in. Next best thing to Canada IMHO. We ride dirt bikes and snowmobiles up by you and have property south of you. A friend has a cabin north of Paradise on the peninsula and they got dumped on this year. 2 feet above the propane tank when we dug it out! CJ
