Tractor
YM1401d
I'm looking into purchasing a small Holland transplanter to pull behind my YM1401d. Fortunately, they have a transplanter that will fit my Yanmar, but the salesman said the tractor would need to drive no faster than .02 mph in order to operate the transplanter effectively.
If I put it in low 1, will that be slow enough? /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif Does anyone have info on operating speeds in various gears?
Thanks very much!!

Are you sure about .02 mph?? That's really slow. The travel speed chart for my 186D shows .61 mph as the slowest speed (at 2600 rpm). I'm not sure I have ever used first range.

Chris,
Yep, he said 2/10ths mph..I think I mistakenly siad 2/100ths!/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif. Anyway, I'm attaching an image of the very basic model which mentions the speed.
Thanks for any help!

Tony,
My YM1301D manual shows 0.94 km/hr (0.58 mi/hr) in low range 1st gear at 2400rpm. I think the YM1401D is geared much the same. To get to 0.2 mph, I would need to run the engine at 800 rpm. I don't think I could effectively do much with my YM1310D at 800rpm.

Thanks, Greg! Ugh!/w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif wouldn't you know it--just when I think I've found a solution..well, I'll do some more checking with the folks at Holland because I really want to make this work, to save my aching back!!.
Besides, there are lots of extras you can buy to go along with the transplanter--and you know you can never have enough toys!/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif
I'm thinking that speed is for really closely spaced plantings--less than 6 inches. Since my spacings are more like 12-18", I might be alright in low 1?
thanks again for all your input!

Tony,
Low 1 really seems slow to me. I'd find it hard to believe that you couldn't do it.

By the way, I assume you are planting pines, spruce, firs, etc for tree farming??

I have never tried it but I see no reason that you couldn't creep across the garden at .2 mph running the engine at 800 rpm in first gear first range. It's not like you are going to be loading down the tractor.

Greg,
It sure seems that low 1 would be slow enough--it certainly seems slow enough whenever I'm tilling in low 1.
Actually, all of our trees are container-grown. We start plants in our greenhouse(annual flowers and perennial flowers/shrubs), then we transplant them into our field in spring--we cut and sell the flowers/foliage to local florists, a wholesaler, and restaurants/hotels. The perennials aren't such a big deal since we don't re-plant each year, but the annuals are our biggest sellers, so we have to transplant a lot each year. Since we're a small operation, I can't hire laborers and I'm looking to save myself lots of time and backaches by using a transplanter!

Tony, it looks like somebody has to ride that thing facing backwards. Your wife's really going to love that.

/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif it's good for me that she grew up working in tobacco fields; otherwise, I doubt she'd go for it! I've offered to let her drive the tractor, but she'd rather ride and set plants--at least she isn't opposed to the idea of a new toy--maybe her back aches a little too!
We actually have access to an old tobacco planter, a two-seater, but it's too big for my little Yanmar.
Attached is another picture of the small transplanter with some of the available options.
