Packed up the family and the Massey and went to the lake house in Trigg county, Ky. Mowed some big grassy hill ground, some sapling covered hill ground, some flats, hedges just a little bit of everything. Shot off fireworks played with the family. Good weekend! Returned home with a mountain of broke shear bolts scattered on the rotary, also a desire for some front Massey weights. Front tires didn't get much wear being off the ground from hills and heavy vegetation. Had a great time with it, may have to take it on vacation to florida in a few weeks.
Hope everyone had a great 4th.

Nice job! So, you have a lake house in Florida too?? I guess you learned to steer pretty good with the brakes, huh?

Can you get shear bolts that have a smooth shank in the part where they are supposed to shear?
I don't think that having a thread at that location is helping with your troubles.
Also, not sure if you are aware of this, but the nut on the shear bolt should shouldn't be socked up tight or that will reduce its shear strength.
A nylock nut will stay put, even if it's left a little loose, and give you the full shear strength the shank is capable of.

Thinking the same thing, you beat me to the post! Get bolts long enough no threads are in shear.

Smooth shanks that I could get a hold of at the hardware store were too high of a grade. I will stock up on better grade 2 bolts. Locknuts take too long and cost more. I just snug the bolt a little not torque it down.

Got to deal with what you can on the weekend in a area where you can't get much.

One thing I found which helped me from shearing to many bolts was to keep the RPM up. At least 2000. The extra kinetic energy helps getting through rocks and branches.
