I haven't been up to Coeur d'Alene since the late 70's before Kellog shut down with the Hunt Brothers fiasco. When that hit the fan I was working down in Nevada at Freeport Golds processing facility. That would have been the early 80's hard times for all in the mineral sector in those days. Ended up in West Texas doing gas plant work.
Idaho and Texas are my favorite States that I've lived and worked in, and both of them were quite favorable with the dollars for me.

A long way from it, if it wasn't for family I wouldn't be here now.
Moved back here about 30 years ago to have help raising my daughters.
So now I'm here where I grew up, about 3 miles from the farm that my grand father started, my father bought from him, my brother bought from my father, and now my nephew is buying from his widow.

I've visited a few places, mostly the entire East Coast and the Southwest but I don't really see myself living anywhere but here. I guess as I get older the winters will become harder to deal with, but they don't seem as severe as they were when I was a kid, so maybe they'll age with me? I think the best weather of any place I've ever visited was San Diego by far, there is not even a close second. It's consistent all year long and doesn't rain just like Albert Hammond sang about. But a cheap house goes 7 figures and its crowded, oh so crowded, and I wouldn't need my splitter for palm trees.

Albert was wrong.

In 2002 the missus went to a conference in San Diego for work and I tagged along. It was raining when we got there and continued to for a solid 24 hours. When it stopped and the sun came out everything bloomed. As Burt Reynolds said in the movie The End, "It looked like Walt Disney threw up."

On the flight back east the couple across the aisle was from the SD area, but a little more inland. They allowed that their power and water bills were $600/month each - and this was in 2002. Wherever they lived you weren't allowed to drill a well for household water. But they did have one for irrigation.

I once had to run a construction job in San Diego years ago. I could not find any local help that would show up more than a day or two. And insisted on daily pay. Then they would go drink and drug themselves silly. What a loser town. The weather is great, the people not so much. High crime are to say the least.we had someone steal our air compressor WHILE IT WAS RUNNING.

That's the perfect size. Furthermore, if all that you had to burn was rock maple you'd have a warm house.

Yes, it is fairly common being a species in the Northern Hardwoods group and is excellent firewood. It is also known as Sugar Maple.

I don't have enough of them to make them a big part of my firewood stack. I have actually started to clear around the ones I have to encourage them to grow. I want to tap them.

That's a fun thing to do - tastes good too. Keep at it so that the tops have plenty of room to expand as they grow. The best tapping trees have big full tops.

And the clearing is diversifying my woods along with giving me some firewood from some trees that I would probably not cut otherwise.

Yes agree on the weather, and yes there is crime, but the average person is usually in a great mood, very pleasant to deal with, even at the airport!

I took about 5 bucketloads from my wood pile up to the house today. It was about 18 F when I did this. Suppose to be in the 60’s next week.

That's good time timing, no rut etc. repair.

Cut down a tree late last winter. Got the big stuff out and left the top. So today I wormed my way back in there and got that cut up and hauled out.

When this place was logged many years ago there were a lot of holes left that hold water (skeeter holes). Put all the brush in one of them and packed it down best I could. Still got a ways to go to get that hole filled in.

Don't know what the deal is with my fon. It can take better pics than this. Must be the loose nut on the trigger.
