Trade-In Value?

I am planning to buy a New Holland TC40A sometime in the next couple of weeks. I am going to trade-in an Allis Chalmers 160 as part of the deal. The dealer and I have not yet talked about how much he is going to give me for the trade-in.

My wife is insisting that I find out how much the Allis is worth on a trade-in. I was hoping some of you might offer a guess.

It's a 1975 Allis Chalmers 160 with 3400 hours on it. It starts and runs great, although it does have mechanical problems. There is something wrong with the clutch as I need to drop the RPMs down to idle in order to shift without grinding the gears (especially into reverse). There is also something wrong with the cooling system as it overheats after an hour or so at PTO speed. It also has an oil leak. It also has a weak hydraulic pump and cannot lift anywhere near its rated capacity. Other than that it's perfect!

What do you think it's worth on trade-in?

I don't think it is worth much. A dealer is going to give you a trade in on based on a lot of conditions and resale value is going to be a major consideration. You are trading in a broken tractor that will require the dealer to do some major work to it. A clutch problem will probably require to the dealer to break the tractor in half, that is a lot of work.

I've sold old tractors outright and gotten 3 to 4 times the price that I was offered as trade ins on 2 occasions. In both cases the tractors were restored classics with no problems, but the dealers really don't want problems, antiques, or other machines that they can't get sold off their lots quickly.

Yesterday's Tractors website shows only 1 sale of a AC160, it sold for $1200 and it was listed in "working" condition. The information on the sale is out of date, but it was the only quick reference I could find.

That tractor is a bit on the odd side for an A/C.......Renault built it with a Perkins engine. Parts are getting scarce for it. If you are charged full list on the NH,you might get $3-4,000 for the A/C which it is not really worth according to your description. In the real world,outside of a collector,I'd say the tractor is worth at tops wholesale $1250 or so.

What do you think it's worth on trade-in?

That tractor has a very popular ENGINE in the Perkins AD152-3, but that's where the attraction ends. Not a big seller when it was new. I've looked up the trade/re-sale value in a couple auction guides, and it list's years of manufacture as 1969-1973 only. Two seperate "models", one is the "One Sixty", and the the "160" in 72/73)

They're more popular is some areas than others. Just north of where I live, there's a strong Allis Chalmers "following" because of one GREAT dealer. I've seen a total of 3 160's sell at auctions, and one off of a dealers lot.

The oldest one (in the BEST condition) sold for (Trusting my memory now) around $3200. Others sold for as low as $1500 to a high of $3500. Now remember that's SELLING price, and NOT a trade value from a dealer, and we're talking an Allis stronghold here.

With the laundry list of problems your tractor has, I wouldn't look for anything near "average" trade. It'll most likely end up going to an auction or shoved to a back lot.

I'm going out on a limb here and GUESSINg (from your description) that it MAY bring $1000 trade......MAYBE.

Different dealers take different roads on trades. I know of one that offeres high trades at the expense of no deductions off list on the new purchase. Others offer nothing in trade and work with you on the new unit. It's all about bottom line.

All in all, that tractor would PROBABLY bring closer to its real "worth" in an outright sale rather than a trade.

What do you think it's worth on trade-in?

Several years ago, I was looking for an AC of that size. Popular older, smaller sized tractor in my area. Most in good to very good condition were going for $5000-$7000 in my area for diesel models. Your has low hours but with the other problems it will take a considerable hit-especially the weak hydraulic and shifting problems. These could cost thousands to fix. Two years ago, I tried to buy a propane AC D-15 I drove a lot when I was a kid on our farm sale. The tractor was half owned by my dad (deceased) and uncle. I wanted it most for sentimental reasons and planned to use it some. Tractor ran great but had never been overhauled and was in good shape. Brakes and clutch were redone several years ago but no buyers but me knew that. Had over 4000 hours and the hour meter quit working 20 years ago. I ran it up to $3800 and then quit. I really thought it should have sold for $2000-2500. I told my uncle he should thank me for running up the price.

Looking at the condition of the tractor.. hyd rebuild, new clutch, and possibly a head gasket.. I'd guess 500-600, and 1000 MAX if he likes you and is married to your sister..

( i'd keep the AC.. do those repairs yourself for about ? 300-450 in parts and your free labor.. then sell the tractor for about 1500$.. or keep it and brag about having 2 tractors.)
