Im not sure where to post this but it really turned my stomach. I copied a story that happened this weekend at a local waterfront area that was recently reopened.

Child drowns in Tish
By Jebb Johnston
Staff Writer
IUKA -- Officials are investigating the weekend drowning of a four-year-old boy near the Yellow Creek area of Tishomingo County.
Peyton Sims was alone inside a pickup truck that ran into the lake waters at Steel Bridge, resulting in the drowning of the child, according to Sheriff Glenn Whitlock. Statements to authorities indicate that the child's mother, Brandy Lee, and her boyfriend, Bobby Thompson, both of Booneville, were camping in the area, the sheriff said. Lee and Thompson were each charged with public drunkenness and released after posting bond. Whitlock said other charges are possible in the case as the investigation continues. The child's body was sent for autopsy. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks are also involved in the investigation.

This lake area was recently reopened after a long troubled time with folks drinking and fighting and such. Through the week it was a good place to go but the weekends it got rowdy. I know the area that this happened in because its one of the places in highschool we used to set boats out in. I didnt know till today the parents were drinking, One thing that was mentioned that the child was placed in the truck so the adults could have alone time and let it get away. I can beleive they let a kid alone in a car unattended especially with it lined up with river. I hope more charges are filed in this act of stupidity.

Yes it does. In 1973, when my own youngest daughter was 4, I had to work on a similar case. Mother and boyfriend drinking in the woods along White Rock Creek in Dallas, less than a half mile from the Northeast Division police station, when her 4 year old "disappeared". I had gotten off work at 3 p.m., but shortly after dark, the mother and boyfriend went to the police station, reported the child missing, and they went home! Officers had searched the woods all night, and when I went in at 7 a.m. Sunday morning, the National Guard Armory was next door and they volunteered to help search the woods, while the fire department divers searched in the water of the creek. It must have been close to noon when the body was found in the water, and the mother had still not come back to the scene. She seemed quite unconcerned when told we'd found the body. As a police lieutenant I had to maintain a "professional" demeanor, but you can guess what I'd have liked to do with that mother and her boyfriend. It's not something I'll ever forget.

The same kind of stuff happens out here on the west coast too.

Even if the kids survive, their "parents" never pay any attention to them and they mostly grow up to be the same kind of people who raised them.

Very observant.

Termination of parental rights, it's a very interesting process (and hopefully it's something you're not familiar with). That said, it's the courts duty for family reunification "at all cost".

Here in N.C, one of the better known recent cases was where the parents tied their child to a tree for punishment and the child died.

One mother who recently was going through the process of losing her child here had to take a mandatory drug test. She failed. This woman complained that the court or medical facility somehow switched her test results with another woman who took a "pee test" with her that same day (almost impossible). Funny thing, that other woman failed her drug test as well.

A comedian once mentioned that if your first name had "two names" in it, chances were good you may make the news for stupidity. Brandy Lee proved him right.

What gets if for me is that they couldnt find anything else to charge them with.Ive been public drunk before, and that was doin some thing minor I didnt go to jail but got a warning. A few months ago a friend accidentally shot his brother and first thing the same county charged him with was assualt with a deadly weapon. His brother even said it was an accident. I think one of the first charged would be child neglect/ and neglegent manslaughter. Im sure theres a few other tings there that could be added. I know the first EMT on the scene and he said it was terrible the boy friend was high and the woman was out on one of the little islands out there. It seems that the first then was they were worried about was them selves. They had to call in recovery divers from Tupelo to hook the vehicle and to recover the body. Another man I know was on the call list for his wrecker he wouldnt go because of the kid involved. Im waiting on the local paper to come tonight to see if any other charges have been filed.

It was definitely a tragedy, but we don't want to get into politics here. Sometimes, some of us are sure, convinced, or whatever, but that doesn't mean we have evidence that will stand up in court. If it were truly an accident, the parents may suffer the rest of their lives because of it, if they really cared for the child. But we usually have no way of knowing that.

But police officers know that victims (person injured) may be lying at the time of the initial report because of fear of the person who inflicted the injury. After investigaing, didn't they reduce or drop the charges? Or did they decide it was some degree of criminal negligence?

Sorry if I got a little political there, It just stews me over that the parents seemed more concerned ovr the truck than the fact the child was in it. The EMT said that both adults were so high. I guess I mjust a little miffed off about it. Everyday I see a load of dead beats mistreating childrenn and it bothers me.

Just because someone died, it does not necessarily mean that there is a crime.

Now I have to admit that in this case, it sure seems like there was neglect, endangerment, or something like that.
