I am looking for a gooseneck trailer with disc brakes does anyone know of any brands that come this way from the factory?
My 22 tag has drums and all trailers I have seen come with drums.
Thanks
Most of the smaller trailers have electric powered brakes. Drum design lends itself to this type of application. The amount of applied braking is easily varied and the hookup is simple.
Hydraulic or air brakes will add considerably to the installation.
Check with a trailer dealer. Most trailers can be ordered with disc instead of drum if you are willing to pay the extra cost. I have a 24' gooseneck by Appalachian. It has Dexter axles with drum brakes on which I just replaced the shoes a couple days ago. If I had wanted to I could have ordered an upgrade (disc brakes package) available from Dexter dealers for the axles I have. A majority of trailers have Dexter axles and most can easily be upgraded to discs if you've ever done a brake job. My drums were in good shape so I only needed the shoe kits. If I had needed drums as well I may have upgraded to the disc kit. Do a search for Appalachian trailers and look up the options or call the toll free number to ask. I don't remember if that option is listed on the Appalachian site but it is available from Dexter at Dexteraxle.com.
If the trailer is not used regularly then the disk will rust quickly unlike drums and could be rather abrasive on pads when put back into service. A disk system is more complex than a drum system. Also cost more.
