We intend to get one of these two tractors. We'd like to start shopping for our tractor.

L5740 HSTC - with FEL and probably one or two other items; shredder, box blade, disc
Tractor weight - 4233 (Tractor with cab - but dont know weight of attachments)

M5040 HDC - with FEL and probably one or two other items; shredder, box blade, disc
Tractor weight - 5335 (Tractor with cab - but dont know weight of attachments)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Just remember, when you add a brush hog, you might need more trailer lenght, maybe more than you had in mind. It will give you more weight on the hitch, being you have to make room for the brush hog by moving the tractor closer to the front of the trailer, not to bad on a gooseneck. But have to watch for that on a hicht pull type trailer. Not trying to tell you what to get, just trying to help.

My current trailer is probably well suited for your needs. Here is a description, and photo.

20' x 83" car hauler
8" channel frame, 3" channel crossmembers, 2 6k axles, 1 brake axle, 10k drop leg jack, 2-5/16 bulldog coupler, 6" channel wrap tongue, diamond plate fenders, raised floor, treated floor, break a way kit, rub rail, brace in center of fenders, clearance lights, receiver tube in rear, slide in ramps
Total cost = $2690.00 new

I would want at least a 10K trailer but a 12K would be better to allow some growth for things like loading the tires, future tractor, ect. 20' is a good length. I have a 18' trailer and it gets real short real quick.

Make sure your truck and hitch are also up to the task.

You didn't mention what truck you are pulling this with. I hope it's at least a 3/4 ton.

I have an M5040. With loader and 6' cutter, I figure it's close to 8000#. I haul on a 20+4' 14,000 GVW gooseneck. Handles very well, fits well. Maybe a bit more than the minimum needed, but I'd rather have more rating than be over rating. My trailer was bought primarily for hauling a mini excavator and skid steer, but also is well suited for the tractor.

In the past, I hauled a M4700 with loader on a 7000# 20' car hauler and a half ton truck. It was overloaded and I only did it a couple of times.

Although the cost is higher, a gooseneck is much more stable and capable carrier.

Make sure you have plenty of length. It allows you room to adjust the tractor for balance plus if you overhang the rear even a short distance, you may have problems with storing the ramps.

I would go with at least a 22 footer. It isn't that much more money and the extra 2 feet would be money well spent.

Agreed. I am always much more comfortable towing an equal load on a gn vs. a bumper pull.

This is a style of GN that I think I will buy on my next go around. I like the ability to side load pallets, or implements over a traditional style Gn Lowboy. I also like that the trailer sits low to the ground for loading wet or muddy equipment, coming off of a flatbed is no fun.

While I agree that a low bed is much better for loading equipment, it limits the width of equipment that can be loaded. Depending on how the wheels are set, an M5040 will probably not fit between the fenders on the above pictured trailer.

A higher deck "over the tires" provides much more width for loading equipment. My car carrier was like the above pictured trailer and I had about 1-1/2" total clearance for the tractor between the fenders.

I keep a 27+5 tandem dual around for hauling the wide or heavy loads. If I could only have one trailer, and it had to handle just about any task, it would probably be a flatbed gooseneck, for the reasons you mention above. However, I just assumed the OP was looking to haul the M5040, or whichever M class tractor he ends up with. Looking at some online specs, it appears the M5040 has an overall width of 73", leaving 10" of clearance on a 83" trailer.

The problem with a lot of lowboys is the spacing between the fenders. My older car hauler trailer only had about 2" total spacing with the M4700. I doubt my M5040 would even fit in there since we are in hill country and I have the wheels set for maximum width.
