B-2910 delivered 8/23/01
I borrowed a 16' flat bed tandem trailer to move my 2910. When I pulled up with the FEL all the way to the front the tounge weight was TOO much. So I backed up and got it to look OK.
The distance from the ball to the front of the trailer is 38 inches, the distance from the front of trailer to center of front axle is 8 feet.

I would like some input from some or all of you TBN buddies regarding this "layout". If I purchase a trailer; I'm thinking the axles should be a little further toward the front of the trailer so my 2910 could be loaded with the FEL all the way to the front and not over load the tounge.

This loaner handled OK when we went on the 30 mile round trip, but if I want to move with the 5' rotary cutter then it will be sticking too far out the back.
Yep, I know the cutter will add more weight to the back of the load, but I don't think it will add enough to "level" the load.

All suggestion, comments, are appreciated.

I am always adjusting where I park on my trailer depending on what I have on the 3 pt. I think you will be surprised how much difference in cg the mower will make.
When I put on the chipper for instance, I have the loader up over the front above the truck bed. I'm sure the chipper is close to 3000lbs

I carry my NH TC33D, FEL and 60" rotary mower on a 20' trailer. When I load my tractor facing forwards, the trailer is just long enough to allow the whole rig to fit inside the confines of the trailer. With the FEL snugged up close to the front rail it puts the tailwheel of the mower about 2-3" from the back edge of the trailer bed. However, it rides heavy on the tongue set up this way. I carry my tractor in this manner for short hauls (30 miles or less.) To achieve the most balanced ride I back my tractor onto the trailer. As I reach the front of the trailer I raise the mower and continue backing the tractor up until the tailwheel extends over the front rail the the trailer. Then I lower the mower and let the tailwheel rest on the frame of the tongue. This puts my FEL about 18" from the rear of the trailer. My tractor rides very smoothly using this setup. This set up may or may not work with a 16' trailer. You would just have to play around with it and see if it works for you.

When I have the cutter on my B2710 I just back on the trailer and This seems to balance the load just right.

What size truck are u using?
A 1/2 ton truck might need a load leveling hitch to compansate
for lack of load cap. on truck.
I've got a 20' tandem axle that hauls everything and w/ SSL
(7000#) I pull it all the way on so all the weight is between trailer axles and truck.
I've got a HD 2500 Chevy and it handles lots of tongue wt.
If the trailer axles are farther forward, it might not tow right
when empty because u won't have any tongue wt.

I usually look at my load before I get up on the trailer then try to guesstimate about how far forward I ought to load it onto the trailer bed and go from there. Most of the time if it's something I've not loaded and hauled before I park it where I think it ought to be, get off and take a good look at it and adjust it from there before I secure it.

Personally, I'll go with a little more tongue weight rather than the alternative because I get a lot better trailering behind as opposed to the fishtailing you can experience with less tongue weight. I'm not recommending this. I'm only saying it's what I prefer. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was pretty much lucky for my TC29D. I have a 18ft double axle trailer that with the bucket I pretty much drive all the way on. Tongue weight is perfect for it. I have seen some people even roll their bucket in so they can get all the way on the trailer. But tongue weight is the most important.

On a bumber hitch you want 10% to15% touge weight. on a goose neck you want 20% to 25%. that is what I have always herd.

I, too, think those are pretty good numbers, DDT.
