i was driving a round yesterday and saw a 3pt 3 plow for sale on the side of the roadand stopped but it was a cat 2 pins.talking to the owner and he said he had a 2 plow trailer type.has any one use one or both types?

A TRUE CAT II plow will have a LONGER drawbar, with CAST (or forged) ends. SOMETIMES, one end is replaceable. (i.e. Ford model 101 plow) . In the case of older John Deere CAT II plows, the top link "mast" is different (taller) on CAT II plows. It isn't always a simple matter of changing lower link pins.

Another thing to consider is that sometimes folks put Cat II pins on Cat I implements. My JD LX-6 mower had Cat II pins on it when I bought it used.

thanks for the reply's.it popped up in my mind just change the cat 2 pins after
i posted. i'm still interested in how well the trailer type works? that part i did not make that clear in my original post i realized after rereading it thanks j

They work good ,but you have to have some HP for it.

A trailer plow will work but you need a high weight to HP ratio for the tractor to have sufficient traction. For example, I plow with a 4500lb 20hp tractor pulling a 2-14" trailer plow. The tractor barely has enough weight to maintain traction. remember that a 3 pt plow puts draft onto the tractor thus increasing traction and it is MUCH more manuverable than a trailer plow. It is very difficult to impossible to back up with most trailer plows so they are not a good choice for tight spaces. Is the trailer plow that you are looking at hydraulic lift or rope trip?

In the agricultural area in which I grew up trailer plows were the norm. There were very few three point plows in use. Backing really was not a problem as the fields were large.

From the little I have seen I would prefer the trailer type plow over the three point if there was significant acreage involved.
