I have a similarly-sized tractor, no backhoe. I bought a 16' Big Tex 70TV to do double duty - hauling brush and trash, some gravel, or the tractor. I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and have some 7% grades to deal with on the highway. Trailer weighed 1900lbs bare, I added a spare tire and reinforced the ramp gate, so I'm right about 2K. With the tractor, loaded tires all the way around, FEL, and a 66" Rhino box blade, I'm close to 6600lbs. The trailer length lets me shift the load a bit to get proper balance, and I installed a trailer brake module in my truck to activate the brakes on the trailer (one axle braked, one not). It was the smallest trailer I believed would do the job well, and it was heavier and more expensive than the competition.
My tow vehicle is a 2007 Tundra double cab, 5.7L 4x4. It tows the load with authority, and the huge brakes handle a big load well. It replaced my 2003 Tundra, which had a 4.7 V8 and drum brakes on the rear - the reason I sold it.
There is no way I'd tow this load downhill with a Tacoma. The towing capacity on a 2017 Tacoma with the V6 towing package is 6400lbs. It's just not enough truck.
