We have two triaxle trailers with cut down MH axles.

Some think MH's only weigh 50 pounds is the reason why the axles hold up when pulling a MH at 70 MPH for a couple thousand miles.

It is true 10' MH axles are not legal hence why they are cut and reduced to legal width. Laws and enforcement are state based and vary accordingly. If one is hauling across scales it seems in most cases they have newer equipment. The farm tagged stuff around here like in other places are ignored unless you clearly have not attempted to tie down your load, etc. For the sake of fees enforcement efforts may change.

If you mow grass around here and do not have DOT regs met hauling that 800 pound mower on trailer rated for that or more will cost you if you get stopped. They seem to know the difference between those who mow for a living vs ones just hauling their mower for some personal reason.

My father has a 16' trailer that i've been using, that has factory MH style wheels and hubs with new non-MH style tires. Brakes on one axle, that don't work. GVW is 9000, therefore under the requirement in MA ( which is the only state that is above 4k lbs!).

It needs re-decking, brakes, wiring, paint, lights, minor welding and I'd like to change the whole axle assemblies as well as springs and shackles.

I've never been hassled for it, but would like to get legal and safe. Is it even worth all that work?

crashz the answer is typically NO because old trailers with more potential hit the market a lot. With that being said sometimes redoing one can be a good family project to let the kids use power tools, paint, wire, etc.

If you get it for free, yes. Buying it is a shot in the dark. Start shopping around for new then price out what this one will take and compare.
